Tyre Profile

Is it ok to use a slightly higher tyre profile in order to get a softer ride? For example 245/50/18 instead of 245/45/18.

I tried this and it caused vibrations but could just be the fact the tyres were not star marked.

I couldn't find tyres in a higher profile that were star marked hence I'm reluctant to try again.

If you are on 18" should be 50 profile on the G11.

What does star marked mean?

Mine is a G30 and the original tyres are definitely 45 profile.

Ah!, thought you were referring to the G11 730d you have in your profile.

It’s unlikely there would be much difference in ride quality just by going from 245 to 250. The choice of tire would be much more impactful, or even playing around with tire pressure (within reason).

Other thing to consider is the effect in your speedometer

If the option of that tyre exists in the idrive I'd like to think that it automatically compensates
If not , the your Speedo could be wrong . Under reading would be good as you could end up with a speeding offence by mistake

I wouldn't do that, stick to what the manufacturer says about the tyre profile, so for the G30 for 18 it's 245/45/18 especially if you have X drive.
By changing the total diameter of the wheel, you car will sit higher as well.
Maybe you can put in non-RFT tyres if you want a softer ride, it is a subjective impression, I myself find the car the same with 18 inch wheels or 19 inch wheels with RFT's.

I went up 5mm on my tires and my speedometer is actually true. Only thing that sucks is the odometer reading increments a tiny bit faster which affects the value...

With higher tyre sidewall your odometer moves slower…not faster. Because now on one roll of the wheel you cover a larger distance.
