Yes, BMW doesn't have counter parts for the black series, it doesn't have a DTM, and it doesn't have anything close to an SLR. And yes the SLR might not be the most agile car ever and the Mercs doesn't come in a manual either. So what? Mercs such as the SLR and the black series are aimed the customers who wants exclusivity, and performance gain might not be their sole concern. BMW, on the other hand, are aimed at people who seek fun and spirited driving, and might not be willing to pay double the price just to get the extra bit of bragging rights.

The S-class is still comfortable as hell as it should be; CL65 owners can still blaze through continents in total luxury. It is needless to say here that the 3 series, M/// or not, can still put that smile on the driver's face when ever he encounters a section of curvy back road; dads can still teach their kids heel-toe in an M5. And unless you are a weekend warrior that qualifies on Saturday and race on Sunday, super cars such as the SLR have only one purpose: to turn heads. The SLR does that perfectly. They all still do what they were built for. And I love them both for getting their job done.

here is my take on these two brands.

first comparing the most apple to apple comman models

1) 3 series > C class
2) 5 series = E class (diff purpose for diff folks)
3) 7 series < S class
4) 6 series < SL (performance both are great, but 6 series is so butt ugly)
5) Z4 > SLK

so my general take is that the larger/higher end cars, Mercede wins. The more comman/smaller/sporty/performance based cars, BMW wins.

even though they play in the same sand box, fight for the same customer base.. in reality, they are very different cars built for different purpose and customers.

No Z4 can keep up with the SLK55.

and no M3 can keep up with C63 AMG, but that's not the point here. i think Z4 is overall a better sports car than the SLK, not just in who can go faster in a straight line. shoot, AMG has every model covered if we are only talkin about straight line performance but there is more go into a car than that and of course, each model is built for different purpose.

The M3 does not win in the drag race department, even with the M3 coupe against C63 sedan. AND, the 'get chicks to look over at my manly sounding engine' (proof, tell me the M3 sounds better, you only have to watch the first 10 seconds department. . Not like the M3 doesn't look good, but side by side, the C63 sticks out

But, it does have much better handling.

not gonna say anything about the SLR being 'the worst' super car Hell, Jeremy clarkson loves it, and it's hard to get him to like a car

I'm just being fair here, I mean look at my sig and my display pic.

the first car ever made was a benz, so you have to give them/him (karl benz) some credit for that invention, it is somewhat popular today.
You have more smilies in your post than a children's book. I will now say good-bye to your credibility.

I have massive respect to both brands. But being 21 and enjoying driving, I'll stick with the boy's toy.

BMW has nothing to do with the F1 other than they built an engine to McLaren's spec. Taking credit for someone else's work is very weak. That would be like Mercedes trying to take credit for the Pagani Zonda.

Other uneducated people will say, Well WTF does the Mclaren F1 have to do with BMW?

6.1 litre V12 made by BMW is what I'd say.

Actually, The engine had alot to do with what the car was. Ofcourse the F1 was not by BMW, but that doesnt mean BMW had to part in it.

The Zonda has a Merc engine, is it a Merc? The Koenegsigg originally had a 4.6L Ford V8, is it a Ford?

This especially sucks because if BMW wanted to they could make better cars than anything Mercedes offers. Look at the C63 vs. the M3 for example. The M3 wins every single comparison, every single track test, etc.
i know it is so disappointing to see BMW falling short, their engine made the mclaren f1 legendary, they need to get in the game as far as that. and i completely agree about them going in the wrong direction, who the hell asked for the 5 series gt anyway?

thats my point. BMW built the engine for that car. the engine is the very essence of the Mclaren. Anyone can make a car look good, its the engineering of ultra mechanical precision is what made the Mclaren F1 what it is, and they owe everything in that aspect to BMW. Im not saying BMW should take credit for the aesthetics of the car, but they get all the points when it comes to the heart that makes it thrive.

I just appreciate both. Like people have said, different models for different purposes. I love my 335i, as its more exciting to drive than my girlfriend's CLK350. But doesn't mean her car is worse, just geared towards a different type of driver.

Our neighbor's C63 AMG on the other hand... Wow
In the end, they're both great, and the brand competition will simply mean we will keep getting better and badder cars in the end.

yes, but they didnt. Now in no way am I claiming the Mclaren is a BMW, but I mean it is but one part of what made the Mclaren what it is. And the Zonda having the mercedes engine, props to MB for making such a remarkable engine. In the end, the Mclaren and Zonda for example have no relevance to this thread, when it comes to which car company has the best vehicles.

You mean, aside from being made almost entirely from carbon fiber and being one of the most pure driver's cars available? The engine is responsible for about 25% of that car's greatness. It is a mechanical marvel well beyond that engine.

This is only my point of view:

Mercedes S Class: The Best Car money can buy.
BMW 7 Series: Exists to fill a gap in the market.

SLK: Supremely good looking and they shoehorn a V8 in if you want to pay extra.
Z4: Latest one a copycat (not very convincing)

SLS: Will stand alone.

CLS: Will stand alone.

E Class: Respectability that the 5 Series can only dream about.
5 Series: Driven by losers.

C Class: Useless
3 Series: Sublime, BMW only exists to provide us a new one every six years. (EDIT: Only hampered by cheap build quality)

ML: The original Luxury SUV.
X5: Pointless, why would you buy an SUV that promises a good driving experience? It'll only play second fiddle to a normal car no matter what they do to it.

X3: Reserving judgement till the next one comes along.
GLK: Reserving judgement till i see the next X3. Does look like it was shaped by Attilla though.

6 Series: C-
E Class Coupe: Sophie Ellis Bextor (YMMV)

SL: Ultimate status Symbol.
Z8: Ultimate fail machine. Bond couldn't help it.

Judgement: Stick to the people who invented the car, just avoid the horrid C Class.
