530e charging question

G30 530e owners. When you charge the vehicle at home, have you ever checked how much electricity it uses for a full charge or is it negligible that it doesn't really show an increase in your electricity bill?

I have an all electric house...5 tons of AC, induction stove, heat pump for pool, etc. 225 amp service. I work mostly from home so I not only plug in overnight but often during the day after taking a trip. I have not been able to tell the impact of the electric charging on my bill.

My EVSE is very detailed so I have access to accurate electrical costs of my 530e since I installed the EVSE. Obviously, since my reporting is EVSE side it can't breakout charging from preconditioning, but that doesn't matter to me.

Like, SteveInArizona I work from home so I can have more charges some days as I can plug the car in quickly after a few short trips and I don't have a traditional "commute" whereas some people stick to mostly work to home and back again.

That being said, here is the charging usage for me for a pre-COVID month of Feb 2020. You can take the kWh and multiply that by your electrical rate to get a gauge of costs. For me, it was a little over $30 @ 11 cents per kWh.

I have the Charge Point Charger. While it uses $0.12/kWh for it's calculation, and my actual electricity rate is $0.117/kWh, it gives me a pretty accurate tally of my monthly charging costs.

Pre-Covid when I was driving to the office every day, I was paying between $20 and $25 per month at home and between $7 and $9 per month at work (I pay/paid $.07/kWh at work as my company incentivizes the power we use there for being 'green'). This was for 20 mile/day round trip to work and the other running around during evenings and weekends.

Currently, I am spending between $15 and $18 per month at home only.

My electric bill runs between $250 and $350 a month depending on time of year. So it does have an impact (5-10% increase, maybe??), but I'm also buying a tank of gasoline every 2-3 months...so there's that. My charger charges at 3.75kW...so basically using slightly less power than an electric water heater running when the car is is charging.

I also have ChargePoint. If you click on the electricity rate in their app you can manually set it to match your rate. I do this as rates in my area can be shopped around for.

Tried that but it won't let me enter $0.117....might be the third decimal. I didn't work on it too hard though....$0.12 is close enough for me.

Or maybe it is using $0.117, but just displaying $0.12....

Maybe just a display issue? As mine allows me to enter up to 4 digits of precision.

Think you might be right about the display. It appears the app is 'saving' the $0.117...just displaying $0.12. Not sure what it is using for calculations, but not going to worry about a $0.003/kWh difference.

Mine uses 8,5 kWh to 9 kWh from empty to full. I charge it 6-8 times a month (at home), so 50-70 kWh. Rest of the fill up charges happen at shopping centers, where it is free.

Thanks for the responses. I'm curious to know though how exactly you can separate on your electricity bill what is being charged amount for charging the vehicle. Are most of you using the included charging module or upgraded to a L2?

That would require
a) kWh meter plug paired with original charger or
b) a wall charging station / other charger with a such feature

Car cannot report those

There is no concept built into the car to know how much electricity was used for charging over X time. As result, you'd be unable to get this information without pulling it somewhere else.

In my case, I've upgraded to L2 EV EVSE that has these capabilities built in (and I can access via WiFi and all that fun stuff). But, if you're using L1 you can always put a smart plug in the middle like a Kill-A-Watt or one that connects to WiFi to allow you to track electrical draw for the car and then overlay that with your utility billing period and rate.

Keep in mind, if you can upgrade to L2 it is worth it due to higher efficiency. So with L1 it is not only slower, but you will waste more money charging. I think it is a 5-10% difference, but might be more in lower charge amounts.
