I scheduled a service appointment and saw this message. I'm not sure what they mean by "remedy may not be available".

"Recall Services: Mfr Campaign/Safety Recall Notice:0011990400 -CampaignId: ManufacturerCampaignId:0011990400 B111618 Delivery Stop: Check Oil Pan for Contamination-If engine needed, remedy may not be available"

Damn. That doesnt sound good. From what i’ve read, if there is crud in the oil pan and the car is started, then engine may have irreversible damage. Have you already got your car, or awaiting delivery? If you’ve already been driving wirh no probs, then maybe your’s is OK. Good luck

According to my CA, no holds, even though other M550's on the same boat do have a hold.

Spoke to Genius today. Ship arrived Friday, car received at the VPC today - with no holds.
To add insult to injury, after sitting at the VPC for nearly a week, being assured by BOTH Genius & my CA that my car did NOT have ANY holds, already having been told that it should reach the dealer Tuesday, I tried to make arrangements with him for next week...

Only to be told late tonight my car has a delivery hold on it for this issue!

We really to know why they even suspect engine contamination.

Ask your CA what would be done if they did find engine contamination. Send it back or replace the engine there?

They would probably replace the engine and keep the car for their own corporate fleet. And order a replacement for customer.

Looks like a similar recall for the M5. Only 12 affected, but they're all getting new engines:

Where did you get this info?

Genius and my CA are being very tight-lipped.

Do you have a link / TSB / pdf / anything that you can share???

I haven't read the entire post but do they say what type of contamination could be in the oil? Whatever it is had to be driven through the motor at some time.

I scheduled a service visit and the appointment email had the recall information automatically posted. I called, and they didn't have any more official information available. I'm going to press them for more information today.

I read the entire post, lots of calls to BMW, no new information. Just that BMW identified 12 vehicles by VIN, and each is getting an engine replacement. They do have an official recall released, though, looks like ours is still pending.

Whatever is in the oil would also be in the oil filter, so make sure they check the filter for contamination.

You might want to also have a look in the G05 forum. Seems the soon to be released X5s have a similar issue in the V8 models. See thread "stop sale?"(sorry couldn't figure how to link on my phone). They mention looking for "debris" in the oil pan.

well I'm not feeling good, hopefully this issue is fixed already as my car hasn't started production yet.

me too. mine is in production now.

For what most are saying, this only affects cars already built over a defined period this summer.

yeah, just hope they hammered out any issues that are happening and nothing new pops up.

According to BMW NA, it's a service bulletin B11 16 18, not a recall as stated earlier. They are to inspect screen filters and other components in the oil pan for the presence of metal fragments. If metal found, replace engine. They said the service bulletin should be available at service centers by now.

Since they're also doing the inspections on pre-delivery vehicles, then BMW must believe that the metal fragments are already in the engine as the vehicle leaves the factory.

one would think, since they know what to look for, that new engines installed in cars now being built are already being check for this problem.

being a long time BMW I6 driver, I had some hesitation about ordering a car with the N63 V8, even though it is now on it's 3rd, and soon to be 4th, iteration. I know many people have had little issues with these but the horror stories all over the web and the forums are disconcerting...

crossing my fingers the N63 "curse" is over.. Although, If I'd chickened out and got a 540, I'd now be worrying about low coolant..

Just got my 550 delivered this weekend after almost three weeks of being held at port. Apparently they need to check each car with the N63 engine to see if the oil contamination has made it to the oil pump and if so then relevant parts need to be replaced. My car got the all clear last week - no oil contamination found - however my understanding is that if the oil pump was affected the delay could have been much longer. It seems like luck of the draw here.

Btw - even though I'm not yet pushing the car until the tires and engine break in I'm already blown away by how good the car is. Moved over from an 2016 Audi S6 and it's really a step up all around.

Nice, I was actually shopping an Audi before I found the 550. Immediately took the Audi out of the running for me.

According to the BMW service center, the metal debris is from the engine manufacturing process, not any component failure. So if your engine is given the "all clear", you're good to go...there's not some bad part waiting to fail sometime in the future. The most recently built engines will have braided oil lines and are probably ok, the "older" ones have plain rubber oil lines.

Inspection took less than 2 hours. If there is any metal in the engine, they will find traces on the components they inspect in the oil pan. If ANY metallic debris is found, the engine will be replaced.

Many will be inspected, probably very few will actually need replacing.
