Steering wheel dash cubby not closing
I never use this little cubby area but yesterday I noticed while driving that it was open. When I closed it the door just dropped down again. Felt around and the latch won't stay in the closed position like there is a missing spring but didn't see anything on the floor. Can someone take a look and see if there is a spring or something else that keeps the latch in the closed position?

A bit of a pain. I could, of course, take it in for a warranty repair but it hardly seems worthwhile. I think I may just email by service advisor and let her know that it happened and I will want it taken care of next time (unless it gets worse). |

That can be painful, use to happen with me on my E60, the air used to turn blue and I still have the scars.

I had this problem quite some time ago. I meant to get it fixed, but as a temporary fix I took a thin strip of paper and folded it over enough times for it to provide the pressure on the back of the latch the way the missing spring would do. I haven't thought about it again until now!

Post from the future:
As potential next owners...we really would appreciate you taking care of this little niggling issue while the car is still under warranty.

Have you found out what the "permanent" fix is yet?

Had the same issue. The dealer ordered a new part and it was fixed. Really cheap design for an expensive car.

If you want the peace of mind of a brand new car with new car warranty, then pony up for a new car. Also, you may be more concerned with what the "well loved" v8 has been through with the original owner. Yours truly, Definitely fixing the cubby under warranty All joking aside, I think it goes without saying that most if not all who experience the failure of this cheaply designed item, will have it fixed under warranty- it's just probably not a top priority for anyone with even a remotely busy life. From time to time you'll hear the second/third hand crowd expressing smug befuddlement as to why anyone would pay the enormous premium of new car depreciation... well, some of us don't want to deal with other people's neglected problems. Generally speaking, when you're in the $80-$90k+ range for a new car, it's more about getting what you want than worrying about "saving" a few grand. |

I then applied the same $40K price to my actual cost of approximately $63K and the depreciation came out to 37%. The amounts are made up but the concept is sound. You are entirely correct that the depreciation calculated against MSRP is deceiving. |

Only the unwary would pay an MSRP for a mass produced car like 4 and 6 cylinder 5 series. The aim is to get 10-20% discount
The MSRP is also there to deceive the second hand buyers that they are getting a bargain. As the used car salesman would be claiming to them they are a getting a bargain using new cars' MSRPs. More so the interest rate tends to be high for the used car compared to new cars. This time last year, 520dM sport was being dashed out at £399/month at 8000/miles per annum for 48 months at 0% APR. Some would also get free servicing for three years throw in, in addition The winner is the person that buys the car new at a good discount or nearly new (prereg) and keep it for a long period. You are able to get all the options and colour you want with water tight warranty (used car warranties do not usually include wear and tear problems like this dash cubby we are discussing).

well this thread took a turn, have my second service coming up so I'm going to call ahead to make sure they have it in stock this time as I'm not going to drive an hour just for a cubby door alone.

My 530e has the exact same issue. When it was in for its first service I asked them to fix it. They refused to fix under warranty. It is still on my to do list to go in and shout at them.

I am not familiar with the UK system but if possible, I would change dealerships. This is clearly a warranty item.
