We have some common heritage. I, too, had a 2018 Carbon Black M550. There's even a couple pictures of it at the end of my thread.

I read your threads so I know how much you like it and how you feel about it on long trips. Did it take time to get used to the seats? That’s my biggest hesitation with eventually buying one.

OUTSTANDING review and fantastic pictures (all 100 of them, hahaha). So, I am well documented on here as not loving the rear end of the 8-series, but I have to say, CBM hides a lot of the angles (or lack thereof) I don't like. That is a beautiful car.

So the E60 was your first BMW and it didn't scare you away? hahah. Arguably the ugliest and most boring 5-series in the history of the line-up, but the bar was pretty low when you went to the F10, so that had to be a major upgrade and as we know, it just got better after the F10 with the G30. I had an F10 535xi, I don't think the car was in the shop once in 3.5 years of ownership for warranty work or repair. I can't say that about any other BMW I've had in my long line-up.

You have had an impressive run, save for the E60

Thanks for sharing.

The E60. Exactly. Gross. I had just missed the E39 when I decided to graduate to BMW. However, X-Drive was a non-negotiable requirement. I live on a steep hill in an elevated part of town. The wife had a jeep, so she could get home. I had front wheel drive, studded tires and chains - and it was a problem. I always had the sporty car, but it was getting old. A friend bought an Audi A4 with a manual. We went on a long golf weekend and I drove it on the way back. I wanted a stick again. And it had 4WD. Hrrrrm, sport sedan. But Audis back then were ugly and boring. Stopped by the BMW dealership and drove one. Mistake. Had to have - ordered a 2006 530xi MT. Hated the design. I put Blizzaks on the first winter and stopped on our hill in the snow to make fun of my neighbors that were stuck in their SUVs. Then accelerated as I drove away. Got a ski rack and took it skiing. That car was awesome - still the best snow car I've ever had. Thus, I am snowbimmer

I suffered through a second one and then was happy as hell when the F10 arrived and even more so the G30.

My M550 seats were the best. I bought my M5 in San Diego and drove it home. My ass was screaming by the time I got to Los Angeles. Could not get comfortable. I did 1200 miles in two days. Day 2 was agony. It never really got better - even had a custom cushion made, didn't really help. The LCI M5C seats were better. Did several 400 mile days. It wasn't bad, but I was glad to get out.

The M850 seats are on par with the M550, just not quite as good. It took no time getting used to. Good thing, because I drove 800 miles in the first two days I had it. I can do 500 miles, easy. I think they are very comfortable. And way better than the M5s.

But everyone is different. Some M5 forum members swear that the M5 seats are the best they've ever had.

I will say this - I think BMW should put a tad more effort ( and cushion) into their seats.

I have had two E39's and still have one (2003 540i M-Tech). Such a superbly engineered car all around. Arguably, it handles better than my M550 and is 21 years old.

I went for the E65 7-series during the Bangle era. Went through three of them. My buddy picked up an E60 540i MT. Three pedals definitely made it more fun. My last E65 I bought new, I think it was $100,000. I refused to put snows on it and was comfortable being "careful". I hit an ice patch on a turn and went into a rock wall and totalled it three months after delivery. I then always put snows on all my RWD BMW's if driving in the winter. I have non runflat summer softies on the M550, I don't drive it in the winter.

My brother-in-law has a 2003 540. He bought it cheap from a friend, maybe 10 years ago. The friend has several cars, tracks most of them. The 540 has, shall we say, some issues. Its high mileage and has now sat rusting in his driveway for at least 6 years. He knows he's got something there, but can't afford to fix it and doesn't want to sell it. Such a waste.

Bummer about the E65. I've only have 4WD for the last 20 years and always run dedicated snows. Never not gotten home.
