Engine Stuttering
Greetings all.
Yesterday, I was thinking about how smoothly my 2018 M550 was running. Seconds later, the "Drivetrain malfunction" indicator/chime came up. Within a minute, the engine as stuttering/chugging fairly intensely. I turned it off and restarted it, and the symptoms were gone. Momentarily, the fault indicator was replaced by "CHECK OK All systems OK." Any ideas what this was? At approx. 55K miles, is this a subtle hint that it is time for new plugs and coils? I'd enjoy entertaining any speculation! |

Not a mechanic but assume if you could get access to a one reader , it will have logged some faults to give you a better idea
Speculation (again I'm not a mechanic so just an uneducated guess!) Fuel contaminated? If under warranty I would certainly get the dealership to see if they can read any error codes if it If out of warranty , that's going to cost unless you think it was a one off |

Definitely try and read the codes. A reader is fairly cheap and should be in your toolbox anyway.
From my experience, BMW's don't fix themselves, this will return at some point.

Reader is in the mail
I bought one a couple weeks ago but still waiting for it to arrive.

Nope. Unfortunately, my new readers won't work on my E39. The newer ones work on the F/G chassis only I think. Worth a shot though?

If you're still driving it, just take it to any Autozone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys, etc. They will scan for free and tell you the code.

Have you replaced your spark plugs and coil packs?

So I got codes for misfires on cyl. 2, 3 and 4.
I'm going to the "$tealer" on Weds anyway, so I'll see what they say about this. |

Usually, a misfire caused by a faulty plug or coil is just one cylinder. You have 3 misfiring. It could be that they all failed at once, but I think chances are slim on that one. I dont know if you're still driving the car with this happening, but I would advise against it. You can destroy your catalytic converters with an engine misfiring. The ECU will dump more fuel during a misfire and raw/unburnt fuel will clog your Cat up.

Anyone know if this is an easy or difficult DIY? What do you have to remove to access it? ISTA recommends removing lotssss of parts including lots of the cross connections, but I don't think that's necessary. |

I had a busy visit with the dealer today. The technician thought my misfire episode had been caused by aging plugs; they offered to replace the 8 plugs for $729. He recommended keeping the coils in service because they are upgraded Delphi parts as opposed to the original Bosch ones (the PO must have had them changed out).
They tried to get this done as a CPO repair but apparently the CEL light has to actually be on when in their custody. Drat. |
