Is it me or does this car have the worst sounding engine in the world? Had a dude with one of these park next to me and it sounded like the engine was broken, like a 25 year old 4 cylinder civic running on 3 cylinders about to die. Frankly it sounded pretty horrendous like something was wrong with the car, but it was a G30 so likely that is just how it sounds, super loud direct engine noise that sounds like engine knocking and the engine is about to fail. I would be embarrassed driving a brand new bimmer that sounded like that and costs over $50k new.

Some people don’t care what others think.

The 530i with m sport has the same exhaust as the 540 msport, what you’re hearing is the engine itself. From inside the car it is nearly silent and you don’t hear the diesel like clatter. The engine isn’t as smooth as the inline 6 but it’s much smoother than most V6 cars. The only way anyone that has driven my car knew it was a 4 cylinder was when I told them or I suppose they’d know if they stood outside and listened. But you can’t hear it from inside.

You’re a bit off on your pricing. My 530i listed for $65k. I wasn’t going to spend $4k more for the sake of someone standing on the sidewalk hoping they don’t think I’m cheap. Living in LA I have no reason to get anything more than the 530i with the 14mph avg commute I have to deal with. If I lived elsewhere I’d definitely have gone with 540, but there’s no point here and I don’t care what people outside the car hear as long as I don’t hear it.

When I want to hear an engine that sounds good I just drive my m3.

Want to experience a miserable 4 cylinder? Drive a current Mercedes Benz C or E 300.

Perhaps next time a 530i pulls up right next to you you should consider wearing ear plugs.

The 530i I would imagine sounds good in comparison to what 90% of our population drive.
