Question Sunroof stopped working

Hello!
In the afternoon, I closed the car and the sunroof closed automatically. In the evening, when I decided to take a ride, the sunroof stopped responding to button presses. Initialization didn't help.

This same issue happend to me. the reset wasn't working either. About 3-4 weeks later it just started working normally again. You can try to unplug the battery and put it back it might help.

Hey were you able to fix that issue?
my sunroof was in the tilt position, with the shade partially open, I locked my door with my keyfob and the sunroof closed automatically.

Later during the day, the sunroof stopped responding, and reset doesn't work either.

My sunroof also stopped working several months back. tried the reprogramming procedure and did not have any luck. My local dealer reprogrammed and indicated I did not hold the sunroof button down long enough to reprogram.

this is weird. I hold mine for about 5 mins. My car is still under warranty so I am visiting the dealership next week.

It can vary slightly from model to model or model year to model year.

It's best to see what the owners manual instructions are. I believe it can be found under eitherPOWER LOSS or GLASS SUNROOF, REINITIALIZE. You can find it quickly using the owners manual embedded in iDrive...or if you have the BMW app which has access to a manual.

Sometimes the engine needs to be running and sometimes its just the START button needs to be pressed....which is the reason for suggesting to check the owners manual for the correct instructions.

I tried the procedure above when my pan roof stuck open, didn’t work a nice chap from BMW assist came out & manually closed it. Car had to go back to main dealer, apparently they had to ‘plug it into their computer’ to reinitialise it according to the service advisor.

Alright, folks, so I spent a day at the local dealer yesterday and they told me that they had to tear everything apart, lube the sunroof motor and it started working.

That doesn't really make any sense to me. They did not give me a detailed diagnostic report as well so I don't know exactly what was done.

They told me if it happen again, they will have to replace the motor.

Weird. I haven't seen a lot of reports of that. But apparently they're big on lubing up these type electrical motors before replacing. It was the same protocol with my steering column, even though it's a known issue and replacement is common. Ultimately, lubricant didn't fix it and they replaced the column.

I had to go back twice for inopt sunroof after 6k miles on the odometer. They replaced the motor the first time. I got the car back and it stopped working after 6cycles. Second time in they reprogrammed it and it's been fine ever since.

I don't know why, there's much worse stuff that can break, but sunroof malfunction is a paranoia of mine. I know as soon as the CPO ends, I'll be paranoid to open it.

If CPO doesn't cover it, just don't tell me. Ignorance is bliss.
