I did a drag race with an M135 with mods, I won, how is that possible?

Hey guys,

This post is not to brag about the performance of my M235i, but to ask your opinions about how is it possible that I won a drag race (2 times) with an M135i that has more aggressive mods than my car.

Current mods of the M135i:

- Piggy back (I really don't know what brand it is but the local seller claims that it pushes the car to 350HP aprox)
- Milltek Sport full exhaust

Current mods of my M235i:

- BMW M Performance Exhaust
- Wagner Performance Intercooler

And in addition, I'm not an experienced driver, I don't do drag racing (actually this is the first time I did it) and the driver of the M135i is way more experienced than I, he actually races a circuit in a BMW 2002 race type. I was ready to loose that race and to be at least one car behind him, but I won by a fender Is not that I'm not happy that I won, is just a concern of mine that with some mods would not be "better" for the car and I was thinking on purchasing that same piggy back for my car....

My first thought was, he was ripped off with that piggy back. What are yours? thanks for your sharing your opinion.

Here's a not so good quality video of that race. When we reached the finish line, the distance between my car and the M135i was almost the same as we had when we pass in front of the camera.

Hehe, you're right, a friend recorded a video (low quality) but it doesn't show the end of the track. Anyway I will post it shortly. I have a GoPro but by the time I did that race, both batteries were dead as it was my first track day also and I used it for that hehe

And no, both our cars are 8 speed automatic, we both ran with Sport automatic configuration on that race.

So basically my M235i stock has better performance than an M135i with a piggy back that pushes it to 350hp? wow

I really need to take my car to the only Dyno that exists in my country and see what I have under the hood, I'm still surprised that I beat the M135i with mods to be honest.

Thanks for your thoughts man

This is true of his car in Guatemala? I think only the NA markets got the upgraded cooling. Even that being said, as OP states he has a performance intercooler and the 1 series does not AND this was done after a full day of track driving, I'm going to say that the 1er needed a proper cool down, but the 2er was ready to go.

Lets take a closer look here:
1- we do not know the tune
2- Local dealer claims 350 whp with no dyno to prove it

Unless he is a terrible driver, it is safe to say he is not pushing 350 whp

How many miles/km's on the 1'er? If it's significant the car is probably due for a carbon cleaning.

Thanks my friends for your comments.... in my opinion, that piggy back is crap. The driver is very very good, otherwise my first thought would be that it's a driver issue but it really isn't, I was actually the newbie on the track for but circuit and drag race

We had a track day but the M135i was parked for like 45-60 minutes prior the drag race. Forgive my ignorance but with just my Performance IC from Wagner, I was able to beat him? So the piggy back is crap, but how about his Milltek full exhaust vrs my MPE muffler only?

And about the millage, yes, that M135i sure has more than I, maybe that has to do in some ways. But be aware that the Milltek exhaust that it has, it's like 10 months old only.

In addition, I'm tempted to purchase the DINAN piggy back, but I have nobody in Guatemala that could help me out with the installation and local shops only install what they sell

The reality is that while it's great that you won, the question should be for your friend to ask why HE lost, not why YOU won. Your car is fine. It isn't The Incredible Hulk of M235i's because some Hans in Leipzig snuck a flux capacitor into your engine. It's just a 2 series. His car for some reason isn't any faster than a stock 1 series. So he should be asking himself what the heck is wrong with my car, rather than you asking why is my car so freaking awesome!??

We already know why it's awesome

LOL you're right man, my car is awesome, I love it hehe. It's just that I was wondering if spending a $1000 on an exhaust is worth it, in addition to a piggy back. I think that when I'm ready to do a mod like a piggy back, I will go with DINAN, no other brand that they sell in my country, DINAN is reliable in my opinion, but, I really hope that DINAN will give me more and noticeable power

You're racing from a stop for a total distance which looks to be 1/8 mile, or about 200 meters. In other words...absolutely meaningless. In such a short distance and less than 10 seconds of acceleration, even a V6 Accord or Camry would not be far behind.

Race from 60 MPH to about 150 MPH if you actually want to know which car is faster.

I go with this
My M135i is faster than M4 with full akra exhaust without tune by a few car lengths racing 60 - 130 So for sure the M135i is fast when prepped correctly.

Biggest factor here is probably off the line grip. Which tires are you guys running? Any of them worn down? As an experienced driver your friend would probably set off in DSC off with too much wheel spin. Did you use Sport+ Automatic?

I appreciate your comments guys. What I meant is that for me is hard to believe that I beat a car that has similar specs than mine and that has a "big" tune: the piggy back.... that made me sad because I was thinking on investing on that same piggy back....

I would have to try again with that suggestion of racing from 60 to 150 but that will be hard because that should be done on open roads which is kind of dangerous due to random people using the same road.

About our tires, we have the same ones, my friend's M135i is not his daily drive so its tires are in great shape. We both used the same configuration: Sport with automatic shifting.

Cheers my friends!

Judging by the results from other users Dinan 235 experience I think you should consider the JB4.

You're the third person that says that to me. Thanks for the suggestion will keep it in mind.

I was between DINAN and Manhart to be honest, but JB4 is a good and less expensive choice.

If it means anything I ran my buddies e92 m3 in my m235i with jb4 DP and CAI at 3rd gear 40 roll and beat him at a decent length but at 3rd gear 60 it was a different story :
