Need urgent input on M550 buy- low mileage 2020 with DHP or build new 2023 (no DHP)?
Hi folks,
There's a somewhat local 2020 M550 with only 12k miles and it has the unicorn DHP. Price is about 12k less off the 2023 build I was planning, which wouldn't have DHP. What are your thoughts? Is DHP worth forgoing brand new? |

Personally I also prefer Msport suspension over DHP. DHP feels numb. Specially with M550i with heavier engine would be better with a firmer suspension. Cornering with DHP doesn't excite me much. |

Honestly, I agree with others, for $12k off a new build, go new build. Not to mention, 2020's are like an LCI step child. Upgraded engine, but old lights and an in between 6-7 iDrive. Don't get me wrong, the 2020's are nice, but if I'm buying right now, I go 2021+, just for the LCI lights and newer iDrive. Maybe you can find a 2021.

How long are you going to keep it? If it's just a couple years, you can buy the 2020 and eat less depreciation. If you're keeping it for a while, I'd get the new one if the money isn't a big decision driver.

I bought a CPO 2018 in 2021 before COVID pricing and I saved $30-40k over new - no brainer. If it was a $12k savings I would have gone new. Either way an M550 is a bad ass daily driver. It's not an M5 but for commuting it kicks ass.

Personally, I'd buy 2021 or 2022 (maybe a little biased haha) bc of the LCI look and new facelift. Amazing ride that can deliver serious power.
Apparently they are redesigning the 5 series again for the 2023 models, the supposed new look from the leaked pics is MEHH compared to the sleek, stylish, and aggressive look on the 2021 and 2022 models. Though you may want to ask your BMW advisor on if there is any truth to the redesign. |

I thought the suspension is the same with DHP. The only difference with DHP is the rear wheel steering.

The one I did with DHP M550i front was rolling a lot and the one without was more contained. Also the one with DHP was higher by about an inch which didn't do it for me personally. |

I think so too. Dhp makes the car corner noticeably better and generally be a lot more composed. The rear axle steering makes it feel smaller than it is. It also lowers the car. An excellent package- that said, not worth going from new to used and losing LCI.

My two cents... if the price works, I'd get the 2020 with DHP and other now-unobtainium options. You get the upgraded motor and (flame suit on) don't get those butt-ugly LCI hockey stick headlamps. No offence intended - I know some others like them.
Does a 2020 still have the coveted in-dash CD player? |

Nope, is it really coveted? I only used mine to pop a DVD in to make sure video in motion was working. I had to actually buy this DVD on ebay because I don't own any anymore, LOL.

If I was to ever get another M550i, DHP would be a must. It makes the car feel smaller while turning and a lot more comfortable over rough roads. I would say it ranks higher in my book than having an LCI.

I am not sure if it's a must for me on the next car. One of the downsides of it is that there is a lack of touch with the road. Cornering can feel like your driving a car in a video game. I definitely want less body roll in pretty much anything I drive, but the rear wheels turning feels a little weird for me. I am pretty sure the only option I do not have is DHP. Don't get me wrong, if it had it I would take it, but during my search I prioritized what I wanted. #1 a and b were B&W and 668M's. I asked a few friends with DHP if they thought it was a must have and the feedback was mixed. Then I drove one with DHP and came to the observations I stated.

When I was looking at the M550i's, I asked about the DHP because a lot of reviews said it was a must have. I asked multiple salesmen at the dealerships, and they all said they would not get it, thought it was money wasted.

you have to try dhp to determine if it’s worth it for you. Once I tried one that had it, I couldn’t bring myself to buy one without. I wish even my m550 with dhp had less body roll. It also appears to be the feature that holds its value best, increasing even the value of a used m550 by around $3k usd. B&w and cold weather being close, but not quite there. If I were in the market today, I’d personally wait until I could find an LCI with it, these sorts of choices are no fun.
