10 reasons to avoid the gym

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...d-the-gym.html

THE GYM may get you fit - but do you ever think how much you could save by staying on the couch? A workout could also leave you breaking wind, or suffering flu or a sniffly nose. So if that New Year's resolution has failed already, don't worry - here are ten good reasons NOT to go to the gym.

FILTHY EQUIPMENT

MICROBIOLOGISTS found gyms can spread everything from colds and flu to more serious superbugs.

Germs lurk in sweat left on equipment and in changing-rooms, saunas, steam rooms and hot-tubs. To be safe, clean equipment with an antibacterial wipe before launching into your workout.

PASSING GAS

YOGA, leg-lifts, crunches and other moves that target your abs can all lead to this embarrassing side effect.

Exercise physiologist Alice Burron says that each time you contract the muscles around your internal organs you risk letting one loose. So avoid gassy foods like beans and broccoli before hitting the gym.

HIGH FEES

BRITS waste £37MILLION a year on unused gym memberships.

The average member pays £564 a year but 60 per cent of people who join in January stop going by the end of the month.

Save the money for a holiday instead.

RUNNY NOSE

EXERCISE stimulates the part of your nervous system that controls secretion by your body's glands - including the mucus ones in your nose.

Scientists believe dairy foods can worsen this, so avoid them for at least two hours before you work out.

EAR-POPPING

THIS can occur each time your foot strikes the ground or you do a heavy lift, as your body tries to maintain pressure between air outside and inside your ear.

Quantcast
Your body adjusts by moving air through the Eustachian tube that links the middle ear and back of the nose - and this causes a popping sensation.

Fix the problem by swallowing and keeping yourself hydrated.

HIVES

SOME of us are allergic to exercise. In rare cases, it can cause hives, flushing or wheezing.

Food can be a trigger, so try to find out what it is you eat that might be causing this reaction - and avoid it for at least six hours before a gym trip. An antihistamine that doesn't cause drowsiness, such as Claritin or Zyrtec, could also help.

INCONTINENCE

A COUGH, sneeze, laugh and intense exercise are all able to lead to an accidental leak.

One woman in three is affected by stress urinary incontinence at some point, especially after pregnancy and in old age.

Do exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, such as yoga or pilates.

HEADACHES

WORKOUTS cause blood vessels in your head to dilate, which can cause a throbbing sensation. Drink water to ease the pain.

TRAVEL TIME

MOST of us live at least ten minutes away from the closest gym.

This means that if you work out four times a week, you spend about 70 hours a year travelling to and from the gym.

Go for a run outdoors instead - and spend the extra time with your family and friends.

HEARTBURN

CERTAIN kinds of exercise, especially running and sit-ups, can push the contents of your stomach up into your oesophagus, leaving you with a severe burning in your chest.

To avoid the pain, steer clear of dairy before a workout and wait at least two hours after every meal before hitting the treadmill.

If chest pain is ever intense or crushing, play it safe - stop exercising and get help.

lmao agreed. It was probably some fat fuck that wrote this article.

"The average member pays £564 a year " I would like to know where they got this statistic from. The most expensive gym in my area costs about $300 a year. So how does the average person spend about a $1000 a year at the gym?

Gyms by me vary. There are $10 a month and $20 a month places, but they're usually shitholes. Then theres the normal chain gym thats pretty decent for about $40 a month. Then theres the "high end" spots for $60-120 a month.

Being 10 minutes away from a gym is considered 'far'?

This is part of the reason the UK competes with the US for obesity rates.

I was paying 70 a month before I canceled it, they were the only game in town. And that was the student rate, I don't remember what the regular rate was.

I quit the gym. And mine was free to any LA fitness. Takes too much time out of the day. Now i just work out in my garage, eat healthier, and spend more time with my wife and daughter.

So you can get your wide-grip bicep curl on?

I kid I kid

Pet peeve when I see a squat rack being used for curls or ppl trying to feel better about themselves and loading waaay more weight than they can handle but only going 1/5 ROM **shakes head**

If you go to a gym because it's "high end" or looks nice, you're doing it wrong. The thing I care about is if it has all the equipment I need. My gym looks like shit on the outside, kinda does on the inside, and has no frills at all.

I lifted at one for about 4 days, only because i have a friend who is a personal trainer who was able to get me a year membership for free.
Really nice gyms, especially the newer ones... but I was approached by an employee while I was doing deads who told me that I was not allowed to grunt or make noises. Last time I went there for weights. I do use the cardio machines there from time to time though
