I've got HK in my new car and also spent a couple of weeks in a Phantom a few years back. I can definitely say that there is no comparison between the two! Don't get me wrong I love my HK system but the Roller is just on another planet

Its similar to £80 tomtom comparison with £2000 bmw pro satnav. When i took the bm for test drive.. Satnav was completely lost
Think he was being sarcastic mate!

Which satnav was lost, what do you mean?

I have not deluded myself by thinking that any BMW sound system is better than other makes, BMW then make you pay extra for this and that to compensate for the deficiencies in the audio/CHAP system. The standard audio systems of an assortment of makes, including budget vehicles, outperform BMW consistently. I love the car, hate the audio, confirmed when dealer lent me top spec'd 5 series. Rant over.... Worst audio of last 10 vehicles, including 3 Lexus two Audi's, Fords, Lotus etc I can't imagine how good it would be in a Rolls Royce or Bentley.

Appologise for my grammar.. I ment to say that when i took out 430 for test drive..i set destination on bm pronav and the nav was confused after 5 mins of driving.
So what am trying to say is bm's pronav which cost £2k is no better then a £80 tom tom

BTW, the subs on the Phantom don't look any different to ones in 3 series! And don't look big at all!

They maybe same speakers or same supplier but x range above.

However, the amp / pre amp, interconnections, interior space, more solid build platform will make it superior.
As I mentioned earlier sig/ noise ratio and dynamic range are key with db/w being signal strength.

They said it is a Lexicon professional grade system.

Without wanting to go down the boy racer method, of putting a massive sub woofer in the boot.

what is the best way of upgrading the audio experience on a car?

HK in f30 is very decent system overall. I had driven yesterday new Audi RS6 with B&O system (whooping £6k) and wasn't impressed given price factor. If you look at value/price ratio HK is one of the best systems out there. Obviously it has some flaws but that can only be picked by "trained" ear.

Good points. Value/price ratio and the fact we are in a pretty hostile environment for listening to music.

Is it really good value to go over the top in a car, as there is so much interference with sound purity anyway? A simple thing like road surface, made worse by a bad tyre choice, can really wipe out the finer quality of an expensive system.

I know the basic system is not that good at all, so upgrades are virtually a must have, but how far do we go for good value in a car?

Then there is our hearing, I've given up on high fidelity, as my ears are now past their best, so sound easily gets distorted anyway, or lost on my ears these days. So a reasonable sound is good enough.

For me, a 3-series is a pretty noisy car environment in reality, so I'd guess the Roller will be a far better place to listen to the HK system.

I've got the MB Quart replacement speakers in my E90 http://www.amazon.co.uk/MB-Quart-QM-.../dp/B009ESLXN2 and they are very impressive!

Need to be amped though, and preferably DSP de-eq'd with a JL cleansweep or similar.

Best value would be to put dynamat in the doors. If you obsess, then the floor, roof and trunk. You'll reduce resonance, noise floor and have that tomb like experience of the Rolls the OP was comparing. Also the added 100+ lbs too.

Good sound starts with source material. Speaker position and tuning next followed by the amp to drive them.

A cheap speaker can be made to sound quite good with good placement and tuning. Upgrading to a better speaker can throw off the OEM tuning surprisingly so the tuning is critical in a car environment.

Is this instead of the HK sound system or to compliment it?

Thanks

Totally agree with these points Pete, additionally, not only are car stereos crap compared to a good home system, you pay a fortune for it and then sell it with the car after a few years!

I spent a lot of money of hifi and AV kit in my 20's but enjoyed the pleasure of it for 15 years before I really felt the need to change it! My current Audiolab system cost a lot of money, but I will enjoy it for many years to come too.

I think the best way to improve the sound in any car is to choose a normally aspirated petrol engine, with more than 4 cylinders, and rev it to the red line, change gear, and repeat!

Ideally something made by BMW, Porsche, AMG, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Maserati...

I will probably be changing the metal dome HK tweeters to silk dome ones which I still have. These cost an arm and a leg and gave really transparent sound.

You beat me to it on that one! As a keen amateur photographer I am baffled by the number of people who think more pixels means better quality. I remember someone ditching their digital slr because their phone had more pixels.

Totally forgot that the lens was tiny (and probably plastic), the CCD was smaller than crappy 110 film and the pixels are the size of pin pricks.

Just like wattage, more doesn't mean better!

Just be careful: I think the HKs have inline crossovers (or at least an inline capacitor acting as a simple high pass filter) so you need to ensure you're not giving your tweeters a full range signal...

My E90 came with the base audio system. If you want to upgrade th HK system you'll need some far more serious kit!
