Back on topic: I will be interested to see the numbers/color combos/etc. if BMW will provide them. I know some folks have been able to do it in some of the other subforms (E9x M3, etc.). Seeing the individual colors that made it over here is always interesting. I'm gonna weep if I see an Imola red M550. I saw an M5 in Imola at the Performance Center in California and it was spectacular.
Imola Red baby, in my top three all time BMW colors. Especially on the E39.

Just curious of the allocation so I know, for example, how exclusive it is or isn't in the US for 2018 MY.

2022M550i , I am with you brother. A lot of ignorance out there with people just jumping on the political/tree hugger movement without really understanding the big picture.

I will say this and have said it, I will be the very last person in the US to give up my ICE powered BMW. I will definitely be hanging onto one or two of them, but I wonder how long before the government makes me get rid of them.
Making people get rid of ICE cars is too much headache and cost to pull off. You have quite a ways to go, but I don't think it would be a government mandate that would make you retire them. It would be eventual scarcity in parts and fuel sources. And that is way down the road. There are millions of people that cannot afford to just dump their car for a new ride because the democrats think it's a neat idea.
$20 per gallon gas would do a quick job of it….coming soon to a theatre near you….and shhh….we're not supposed to mention political parties or this thread will suddenly disappear. Conspiracy theory alert: a population dependent on a single energy source is easier to control. And no, I don't have balls of tinfoil in each corner of my house
My bad! Rookie mistake.

My overall point - there is a TON of money and livelihood from the top down in ICE vehicles, new and used, and keeping them going. And the more they push to EV, the less gas needed. So even if the supply side goes down, demand should go down as well. They could pile more taxes on it and probably will, but at some point they're just taxing the lower classes that can't up and buy a new car. Then you're looking at subsidies to allow people to buy new cars sooner than they normally would. That requires serious legislation.

We are going toward EVs across the board. But there are 330,000,000 people in the US. That's significantly more than all of Western Europe. It will take considerable time.

And like I said, I think the lesson will get learned and it will be a mix of PHEV and full electric. Which is good.

All I know is that it is refreshing to see a lot of like-minded people discuss these issues on here….we're on the same page.

Hopefully I hear back from BMW within the next few days so I can share some production data! I'll keep on top of them.

Well, I guess we'll never know the production numbers for the M550i. I reached out to two people at BMW and finally got a response.

"It’s always great hearing from our customers, and we hope you’re enjoying your 2022 BMW M550i xDrive Sedan!

While we’d like to be able to fulfill your request for information, data regarding M550i production numbers by year in the US market is considered proprietary information and, thus, cannot be shared. "

Yeah based on their financial reports, they only make the number of 5 series sold available. They don't break it down much further.

Eyeball test, I would bet M550's represent 10% of the total of all G30's sold in the US for a given MY. I am being generous at 10%. On a sample 10 mile drive home from work in traffic, I will probably see 5 G30's, all 530's and 540's. I may see an M550 once every two weeks. I'll tell ya, it's nice to have an exclusive BMW model given the saturated number of BMW's on the road.

I did a little controlled sampling. I went to BMWs website and went to their national preowned/certified inventory. I subtracted out all unclassified 5 series. That left 1,850 G30 pre owned cars. I grouped all drive types of each sub series together (for example: all 530i, 530iXdrive, 530e all under one number). Here is the breakdown:

530: 49%
540: 30%
M550: 11%
M5: 9%

That's a decent national sample is probably somewhat close to the numbers your looking for. This also matches up with what I see around town, here.

SO, to take it one step further, if we straight-line the allocation by state which I know is not how it works, but for the purposes of demonstration:

2018
43,000 E30's
10% M550
4,300 Total
50 States
86 M550 Per State

This is why I see an M550 every few weeks if I am lucky!

I got to call it a day soon here at work as I am doing more math on the internet than for my projects! Got to get out of here and blast my exhaust

There are two 550s at the golf club I belong to, but neither is a G30. There is one for sale locally, but other than that I don't know that I've seen any.

Yeah, that's telling as well as MA where you would think the demographics and affordability would drive more demand for the M550 and sightings. There are probably more M550's in MA, CT, NY, NJ and CA than any other state, but they are literally impossible to spot on the road.

I'd like to see a study of the concentration of BMWs at country clubs. I know at mine, the eye ball test doesn't apply. BMW owners play golf!

Ha! Yeah, there a few. With the prevalence and popularity of SUVs down here, there aren't as many sedans. Maybe 3-4 5 series. No 7's that I can think of.

The vehicle to have for everyone from hunters to soccer moms down here was a Chevy Tahoe for years. Now it seems the Lexus LX and GX have taken over a lot of that market share.

I did see a woman in a pink Boxster this week. She used to have a teal one. I don't know where she finds them.

Maybe she had it wrapped?

SUVs are the rage here as well. I have two. A big QX60 that my GF drives and a VW Tiguan (small) that I bought predominantly for my daughter.

It's a real thing. It stops at body roll for me. I hate the QX60, but man those Japanese cars just don't break.

I'd like to see a study of the concentration of BMWs at country clubs. I know at mine, the eye ball test doesn't apply. BMW owners play golf!

The RX we just traded for the GX was a phenomenal car. Not my style (not fun) but was fantastic. Hope the GX is the same. They don't break and their service here is hands down the best in town. But I swear this GX feels heavier than my '16 Tahoe (it isn't), slower (it is), and somehow it burns more gas… premium gas!

I had fun driving big cars but I'm so happy with this 540. I feel no remorse or urge to go back. It's a killer car. No doubt I'd enjoy the thrill of the V8 550 but ego aside, the B58 has all I want and more than I need. It's fun I can use daily, unlike 4WD. And I very much enjoy my new world of not eating a tank of fuel every week.

A simple search on Autotrader returns the following results for 5 series BMWs with model year of 2017 or later:

4 & 6 cylinder: 3,900
8 cylinder: 525

That's represents about 13% of G30s currently for sale.

I see a M550 in your future. You remind me of me 15 BMWs ago. It's a disease!

Truth be told, I've only had two BMW I6s. The rest were V8's. My first BMW was an E30 with three pedals. Bought new. The other I6 was a 530i E39. Bought for my son as his first car. Big mistake. Totaled it. Kids should get Camrys and Accords.
