I'm really struggling to understand the concept of a hybrid if the car does 18-22 mpg. Fully charged battery on e drive lasts only about 15 miles and I am not talking e max... no.... combined with the engine. Further so the battery does not recharge while driving. I have read posts where other owners claim their battery recharges some.... what's wrong with my car?

Unless you're in Battery Control mode, the battery doesn't really recharge sufficiently while driving. But when you engage Battery Control mode, your gas mileage suffers. I find that when driving in Auto or Max Battery mode, the recharge capacity is really only enough for the Boost function. Whenever my battery is depleted (---), The car drops down to 24-27mpg... Even with significant effort (low a/c, econ mode, etc.) on driving efficiently, I've never gotten the advertised 29mpg.
I reset my trip reader every time I fill up but I think my reader reads 35-40 mpg by the time my "low gas warning" appears (450-500 miles). And this is with switching between the different edrive modes to maximize efficiency. I do spend a significant time on the highway and most of my trips are over the 16 mile electric range. I also charge my car 95% of the time at home. Can any 530i owners comment about their gas mileage? I am assuming you guys are getting ~25mpg (city/highway combo)? |
