How fast?

I'm curious how fast have people driven your 5 series? I would worry about lift going over 140

M550i looks pretty stable here at 160

Surprisingly fast for a Dutch driver. I normally avoid the "yellow plates of death" on European highways. I noticed a bit of sway in the video at 260 km/h (160 mph). I know that my 2020 M550 felt as if it was getting light at 140 mph so I throttled back, still with plenty of rpm's and hp left to push

On a recent trip to the Mexican highways with my Dragy,I did a standing start 1/4mi and kept it pinned til the limiter killed the party at 130mph(indicated) which was really 128mph. Think it just clicked into 5th gear too, coulda been 6th I don't exactly remember.

Felt real stable,I wouldn't have any issues seeing if it had enough HP to pull to redline in 8th gear after a tune and maybe a splash of race fuel to be safe.

Not in my G31 but when I had my F31 I hit 136mph (with roof box!!), whilst on my way to Austria via the autobahn. The car felt like it was about to take off.

I thought that BMW put a speed limited in the cars in the 140's MPH tp avoid the German government putting speed limits on the autobahn

Can't speak for any other 5-series (not M5 obviously) but my '20 M550i rev limiter cuts in at an indicated 130mph

Depends on tires spec’d on car at purchase. Max is ~155 with summer perf tires

Can also code off rev limiter with tune

I have the performance non-runflats with the limiter at 155mph on my 2019 M550i.

Had her at 140mph before I eased off the gas. She was ready to keep going, but that was enough for me. Quite stable and smooth. When I slowed down it got quite a bit quieter and felt like I was barely moving, even though I was still doing 100 mph.

143mph in my 2018 M550ix. Had my F10 M5 at the same speed on the same stretch of road last year. Both cars were smooth and stable. Felt like I was doing 90mph.

I've been to 140ish on the back straight of VIR with the M550i. The car felt fine, although my F10 M5 felt better at 155 mph in the same place.
Note it is hard to tell the increasing lift due to the straight going up hill, cresting (which always causes lift), and then compression into a dip and back up hill while braking

Do you miss having an M5 or is the m550 enough?

Got an M5 Comp up to 144 on the straightaway at COTA, before I had to brake for the next corner. Still pulling hard and very stable. Never had my own M550 up to that kind of speed. These were BMW cars at M Track Days, stock except for carbon ceramic brakes.

I thought it was a gentleman agreement between manufacturers to avoid a top speed battle +20yrs back since most buyers would never go that far. Also, Auto motor und sport wrote back then that it would cost significant overhead to go higher on the axles and tires. This would make the cars too expensive for never exploiting it.

Wrt stability and speed, my list:
E39 530i up till 150 mph feels like a true suicide mission. The vehicle dynamics are completly compromised and it becomes balistic. When you need to correct your traject or hard brake, you're dead. That simple!
My F10s (520d) felt certainly more stable and planted at 140. Not to the level where you could briskly change direction or speed though. But I did it with my two kids in the car without having remorse or sweating hands.
The X3 2.0d never went over 120mph and did well, no problem and rather stable, and it certainly has no performance ambitions at all.
The M4 and M4 competition went fast to 165mph and also here, not really top confident about remaining directional stability. I could still brake hard, but with clear impact on traject.
M5 F90 felt seriously capable at 165mph, and still decent sensitive on the steering input and traject adjustments. I felt confident to make very late, very hard braking interventions. Incredible machine this is, how it makes all these extreme things super simple and provides confidence!
But also M6 gran coupe felt rather stable at 165mph, good directional response and confidence. I would say a bit less than the F90 though.

I can’t speak for Europe, but I don’t recall that in the U.S. But that did happen with motorcycles many years ago. They agreed to limit them to a paltry 186 mph. I run my motorcycles pretty fast on backroads, and once ran quite fast in a 2009 Z06 I had. But my BMW 540 is basically a grocery getter on the greater Houston area for me. The bikes get all the fun.

True for many German cars to be limited to 150 or so in years past. However I feel that given many American Corvette and other sales there lately, many German models, especially Porsche now have much higher limits. BMW offers the "M Drivers Package" in Germany and the US to allow 186 mph. Plus you get a day of driver training. The biggest limit is tires, Only the top tires are rated at a sustained 186 mph, and none are rated over that. Although the Michelin Cup 2 has been tested and used on super cars that can hit 200+ mph.

I just read an old German article about it (late 80s), the main reason was to avoid that the faster cars would provoke a political debate with a general speed limitation as a possible consequence. Apparently the E32 750i was the first car to have the limiter at 155mph. Merc and Audi jumped in and they positioned it as a statement of responsability and also a kind of "prestige" that they had to limit their cars to 155mph. So the limitation somehow made the car sexy, since buyers started to state they had a car in which the monster had to get electonically contained. Only the happy few could state that back then in the 80s.
