Naturally aspirated flat sixes return to the Porsche 718 in new GTS 4.0 models
Porsche is finally returning the glorious wailing flat-six engines to the Boxster and Cayman in a non GT4/Spyder model.
The new GTS 4.0 trim includes a 4.0L NA Flat-6, derived from the 992 3.0L Flat-6, with 394 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque and a 7800-rpm redline paired exclusively to a 6-speed manual and standard Sport-Chrono Package. Of course it will also have the typical Porsche tax likely starting around the high 80's and likely fully optioned well over 100. This should likely sooth over some of the controversy regarding the current Flat-4 engines the Boxster and Cayman use, and possibly help resurrect some sales as the current generation has been seeing quite a decline. I considered a base Cayman instead of the M2c when i was shopping. I admit that the fact that it's a 4-banger now gave me pause. Sounds like that won't be changing any time soon, but the switch to 4-cylinders seemed like a mistake for them. Hard to justify dropping 60k on a sports car that shares a cylinder count/hp figure with a 25k mustang. I'm glad buyers at the top of the range wont have to deal with them anymore.

A lot of car makers seem to be still sticking ICE engines into their cars and still sinking R&D into ICE, and it's not just Porsche. I'm going to use an expression I've used when talking to some women in the past: "I'm getting mixed signals".

Certainly more appealing now. It wouldn't surprise me to see them replace the four bangers in the base models with an EV setup in the near future. At least they'd be faster and sound better. Leave the 6 for the enthusiasts, give the base models even more torque.

They’re just sharing parts across models. Usually that’s lame but in this case it’s to our advantage (unless you like 4 bangers in a Porsche). |

Nice that there is still a car maker out there listening to what people want, willing to try different things, and even changing directions when they need to.
Doubt we'd ever see BMW do that, too many bean counters making decisions. Last edited by tdott; 01-15-2020 at 09:47 PM.. |

If you hold onto cars, I think the opposite could be true. There won’t be very many of them out there.
Personally, I never worried about the cylinder count of any car I bought. I care more of it’s capabilities. I am very happy with my base 718 Boxster. However, if this causes four cylinder 718 prices to drop, I will probably pick up a Cayman as a companion. |

Not gonna lie, feeling the same way over here. My father in law transferred the end of his lease on his 718 Boxster to me, and it was my first experience owning a Porsche, and I loved it. The motor is definitely not my favorite, being one of the reasons I ultimately went with the M2C (that and it was cheaper), but I do miss the drop top experience and I loved how fun and light the Boxster is, and now that the flat six is coming back, although at a price, I'll have to think about it in a year or two.

Just glad I got one the last of the flat six Cayman S
The 718 GTS will be a detuned 4.0, manual only car from now on. Good news if you want to score a deal on the outgoing four cylinder GTS. Not good news if you just plunked down $100k on one a month ago. |

"still sinking R&D into ICE, and it's not just Porsche", other manufactures are still making improvements on ICE, just look at the HP outputs that come out every model year. I'm just musing BTW, if the EV was taking the world by storm then you'd think that EV's would be filling the floor in every showroom and you'd be hard pressed to find an ICE on the lot.

I think it's great to have options and awesome Porsche does respond to customer feedback. I too thought the four cylinder was for emissions, so now they offer a flat six again with even worse fuel economy. But honestly the flat six is a great engine especially if you like to drive in the upper RPMs all day long.

This is exactly what I mean. 997.2 is amazing. Thought about getting one earlier this year but bruh, I don't have space for 3 cars.
