530e Charging Flap issue

If you own a 530e, you’ll eventually run into an issue with the charging door not opening. This prevents you from being able to connect the charging cable, pretty much defeating the purpose of owning a PHEV. The failure mechanism is the lock solenoid that won’t release. The fix is to replace the whole door housing. It comes with a new solenoid. It’s BMW part # 51177387935. Costs around $70.

How complex is the installation?

Not too difficult. Took about 15 minutes. You have to drill out the “dimples” in order to put a small screwdriver in to pry it free. Then disconnect the 2 electrical connectors. The outside panel also has to be carefully pried and slid off.

Thanks. I had my door fail under warranty so will keep this thread referenced for if it fails again.

Had this happen on my 545e. Had to pull the cord situated under the hood to release the flap door. Now I have this message constantly on my idrive screen 'charging port flap door open'. How do i get rid of this message?

Mines been showing that message randomly also. Hope it’s nothing too serious.

No. But I'm going in for my first service soon and will insist on a charging port module change out. Two years warranty left on car.
