I wonder the same thing...I believe that there are some challenges in shipping and storing the hydrogen, but it is the most abundant element in the universe, so seems like a good plan to look into...

This comment is actually dead wrong. Sorry, but an in-line 3 has very similar characteristics to an in-line 6. These engines will be smoother than any 4-cylinder. I could go into a technical explanation, but let's not go there because I don't feel like writing a lot.

Even if you are correct (and you might not be - it's a debateable point for sure) production costs are only part of the picture. There are regulatory compliance concerns, and this new engine should help lower emissions just like the N20 is doing vs. the N52.

Sorry but it will be less drivable more expencive car with with pathetic half of an engine. And good figures on paper.
More highly questionable, largely baseless opinion. As far as half an engine goes, today's 316i or 320i have half on a M3 engine too. So who gives a rats ass if another engine exists in the lineup with half the cylinder count and displacement of a larger engine?

Scott says the F2x will be all-turbo from the get-go, so I think there's a good chance this engine might arrive either this year with the F20 debut, or perhaps not until sometime next year. You have to figure the F20 will need entry level models as soon after launch as possible, and I don't see them using an N20B20 for those applications. I can see perhaps 123i or 125i with a lower powered N20B20 but I have to believe that a 116i or 120i will use the turbo 3.

The wildcard in all of this is of course the rumored smaller displacement N20 variant.
