called BMW genius today and told me car to be done week 34??
I asked him if it possible for a car to be built taking so much time (no individual options chosen) and he said yes

I though that the BMW genius had more updated info than automated ones
I found the on-line site to be updated pretty quickly, and I've never called the Genius line. Once the car hit the assembly line after the paint booth, things moved along quickly. You can see the last summary timeline I posted for the details.

Well, now it's a Hurricane...and a timeline update.

The Horizon Highway is in port in Brunswick, GA; due to depart for Charleston, SC later today.

Hurricane Isaias is heading towards the US and will head past Charleston around 2AM on 3 August, when the Horizon Highway is scheduled to dock at Charleston.

Waiting to see if/when the Horizon Highway departs Brunswick today as scheduled, or is delayed, etc.

In the meantime, here's where we stand on the timeline.

(Read: Event: Date - Elapsed days since production number assigned (Amplifying comments.)

Production number received (Status 111): 5/28 - Day 0 (BMW reflects some, but not all of the options from my original order.)

Scheduled for production (Status 112): 5/29 - 1 Day elapsed from production number.

(I made some changes to the configuration at this point due to the LCI dropping some options, but since the car hadn’t begun production, it did not impact the timeline. The changes were committed on 6/5/2020.)

The car entered production and a VIN was assigned (Status 150): 6/16 – Day 19 (Any changes to the options, etc. after this point would have delayed the build of the car.)

Exterior body assembly and painting (Status 151 & 152): 6/29 – Day 32

Entered the assembly line (Status 153): 6/30 – Day 33

Assembly in progress, quality check, final assembly, ready for transport, and awaiting carrier assignment (Status 155 & 182): 7/1 – Day 34 (A total of 3 days to build the car, including a 24 hour delay (probably for the paint to complete curing, the next dayshift, etc.)

On the train to Bremerhaven (Status 190): 7/2 – Day 35

At the Port of Bremerhaven (Status 193): 7/3 – Day 36

In transit (on the Ro Ro Ship HORIZON HIGHWAY – Status 195): 7/8 – Day 41

I lost updated tracking on the ship on 7/14 (Day 47) after it made a couple of port visits and headed out across the Atlantic. Rather than paying for the Satellite tracking (or playing the sign up for 7 days free, and sign up again), I waited for the ship to get in range of a U.S. east coast shore AIS station, which happened Friday (7/24 - Day 57) as the ship approached the Chesapeake Bay.

From Bremerhaven to Baltimore, total transit time was 22 days (the ship docked on 7/25 – Day 58).

The ship then left Baltimore for Brunswick, GA on 7/27 (Day 60) and docked in Brunswick on 7/29 (Day 62).

The Horizon Highway is scheduled to leave Brunswick today – 7/31 (Day 64) and is expected to dock on 8/3 (Day 67) – if the Hurricane does not delay it.

For anyone interested, the Horizon Highway is owned/operated by ‘K’ Line America, Inc. (https://www.kline.com/) and this series of ports is what they refer to as the ‘North Atlantic Shuttle (NAS)’ route. After it’s stop in Charleston, it will head back to Bremerhaven arriving o/a 17 August, where it will start the route over again.

So, if the Hurricane doesn't impact the timeline, 67 days from production number received until the car actually touches U.S. soil if you are doing PDC delivery on the East Coast.

For those of you who have been monitoring this thread - thank you. I appreciate your comments/PMs/and your 'appreciates'.

Hopefully, I'll have a concrete delivery date to share later next week.

Docked in Charleston, SC

The Horizon Highway docked at Charleston at 4:18 AM this morning, so my car will be getting offloaded soon (hopefully today).

The car was in transit for a total of 25 days (Bremerhaven to Charleston) aboard the ship.

Next step, customs clearance, emissions verification, and transportation up to the PDC in Greer, SC where it will be prepped for delivery.

Unloaded from the ship.

Well, the Horizon Highway headed out to sea early this morning to start its trip back to Bremerhaven (with quite a few X-Series BMWs aboard, I'm sure) and avoid the now Tropical Storm Isaias heading up the east coast.

My car should be on-shore for processing, etc. starting Monday and then off to the PDC, unless the processing is being done there after customs clearance, etc.

Now car is stuck on "Quality check" for 3 days, but I think the car was finished because I am able to download the manual using the VIN number. Initially automated system said the car will be finished on 7/31/2020

I would wait until tomorrow mid-morning and let the system update, and you'll likely see the updated status.

This is interesting...my car is 'At the Port' again.

Now that the car has been unloaded in Charleston, the BMW 'My Garage' is showing the car as 'At the Port' again.

I think this is supposed to reflect status 196 -'Shipment arrival at destination port' (described in post https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1315141), but it sure does appear to be a step backwards if I didn't know any better.

So my guess is that the next update when it's 'In Transit' should mean it's on the way from Charleston to the PDC for delivery.

Your CA can tell you. It's reflected in their internal system a few days after the ship departs.

Thanks. I spoke to my CA this morning who confirmed it was off-loaded in Charleston.

Still waiting for it to clear 'engineering hold' and get transported to the PDC. Hopefully I'll hear more later in the week.

Trying to burn time reading theowners manual and thinking about extending the baseline warranty and other options
I did not opted to extend the warranty on my F80M3 and now paying the price
Got quoted 4,100 for platinum covering 6 yrs /75k miles
Sounds reasonable?
What other options are there?

Extended Warranty Thoughts, and Expected Service Intervals for the M550i

I went digging through my notes when I did my research on the G30 and I spent some time working with the service advisor who has been taking care of my current F10 550i before I made the decision to buy the car.

Biggest issue they have seen so far (as of 2/2020 when I made my decision) with the G30 is a slight tendency for it to drink coolant. He's told me I can come by if it happens and they will take care of it immediately.

He also mentioned that they had an issue with the active cooling vents for the engine not being durable enough in cold weather - an engineering fix was applied and it shouldn't be a problem with the 2020 MY and later cars.

Also, he said that since the G30 came into service in 2017, they haven't yet seen exactly what the long term issues with the car might be. Those will begin to play out next year.

I looked at the data Consumer Reports holds for the G30 MY 2017 cars, and it shows reliability issues with the body integrity (squeaks, water leaks, etc.), in car electronics, climate control, fuel system, and average performance with the drive system. Those issues all improve as the model years advance, likely (IMHO) because the MY 2018, 19, and 20 cars haven't aged enough to show the wear. Also, CR only shows the aggregates across the range of trim levels, not for the M550 in particular.

WRT the extended warranty, I recall the prices my CA quoted me as being really steep (I can't find my notes, but I want to say $6-7K and up to get it to 7 yrs and 100K miles).

If I remember correctly, you can extend the warranty anytime up to the original warranty's expiration, so you can wait to decide.

I'd suggest some internet searching:

Here's a couple of reviews of the BMW extended warranty:
https://www.thedrive.com/reviews/268...ended-warranty

https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/bmw-v...nty-books.html

The warranty brochure is here:
https://www.motor1.com/reviews/39455...nded-warranty/

Also, I'll offer the expected timelines for certain maintenance items my service advisor shared with me for the G30 M550i:

Oil Changes - every 10K miles ($180)
Spark Plugs - 60K miles or 6 years (sorry, didn't ask the price)
Brakes Flush and Cabin Air Filters - Every 2 years (didn't ask here either)
Engine Air - Every 3 years (or here)
Brakes (front) - $1,200 for the Pads and Rotors - Rotors should last 80K
Brakes (rear) - $1,100 for the Pads and Rotors - same rotor wear interval

Is the extended warranty for the G30 worth it? I think you need to do the math based on your expected use of the car, your projection of the repair expenses, and how long you plan on keeping it. I'd also look into the viability of an extended warranty from a third party, but I don't have any direct experience with them to share.

Hope this helps you out.

Waoo, good read!
Will check those links, thanks!!
I’m planning to keep car at least 6 yrs
I drive a lot, I can clock 70k miles in 6 yrs easy only commuting
So far I’m leaning towards BMW extended warranty, looks you need to shop around for better pricing

Really nice read Doc......your thoroughness is noteworthy. I have had some of the same thoughts about extended warranties. My own opinion revolves around these variables: how hard am I on equipment, how long will I "really" keep the car, how vulnerable will I feel when I am exposed (out of warranty), and lastly, knowing that the warranty provider makes money on this, "On Average". My 2 cents.

Delivery Date! (and an Updated and Final Timeline).

I heard from my CA this morning. Delivery at the PDC is scheduled for 1 September. (I've been waiting six months, what's four more weeks?)

So here's what should be the final timeline.

The Horizon Highway left Brunswick on 7/31 (Day 64) and docked at Charleston on 8/1 (Day 65).

The car was un-loaded on 8/1 (Day 65) and began processing at the port on 8/3 (Day 67).

On 8/65 (Day 69), my CA informed me that the car had cleared the engineering holds (likely due to emissions inspection for the new MY cars) and the PDC was scheduling delivery for 9/1 (Day 96).

So, 96 calendar days from production number assignment to delivery at the PDC in South Carolina. I think that number is the more realistic benchmark to be aware of, because...

If we count from the day I placed the order and put down the deposit, it's taken six months, bearing in mind that includes the impact of the pandemic - which included a month long shutdown at the factories in Germany, and the delay caused by BMW's cancellation of all 2020 MY production of the M550i as production resumed, which converted the orders into 2021 MY cars.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I'll post some additional information about the PDC delivery soon.

So, if you were getting delivered to a dealer, then you would most likely have it next week? Just curious, as when I called to get status of my order today, they were estimating delivery would be week of Aug 17th, as long as EPA approval is done.

I would think so, yes. You have to wait on the PDC's availability to schedule your delivery.

I'll be posting some information about the PDC soon. I'm going through the paper work now.
