Adding CarPlay to my system

I've just purchased my 2017 G30 that comes with Pro Navigation and I'm wondering if it's simple enough to add CarPlay?

Is it just a case of purchasing the option in the ConnectedDrive store or does it require a trip to the dealership?

Cheers!

Theoretically it should start working when you purchase it online via the connected store. Only thing I'd say as someone who got it, iDrive is superior for some functions while CarPlay is better on others. However, you could totally not have it and not miss it.

Another question. I've got WiFi in my car so does this mean I can do wireless CarPlay if I choose to go ahead with it?

Yes. CarPlay is implemented via WiFi. It's handy from that point of view.

On my '17 X6, you had to pay $300 to have it installed (if it wasn't installed from the the factory) which came with a 20 year license. It was an individual option. BMW moved to a subscription-based model '18 and newer. I'm sure it's the same on the 5-Series.

Bumping along on this topic. I finally received my G30 on Friday. Absolutely love the car, but it was sad to see the F31 go.

I decided to try out CarPlay using the 1eur one month trial and I rather like it all. Only, I've had a couple of people contact me offering a USB activation for around US$100.

Obviously this is a lot cheaper than the 299eur lifetime price BMW is asking for, but how reliable is the FSC code?

I've read if the dealership do any coding to my car, I'll lose the activation and it'll also block the USB FSC activation permanently. Is this true, and what other risks does it carry?

Yes, it is simple. There are official and unofficial channels.
