Snow cables on front of 335xi

I am looking at the SCC Super Z6 cables. I was hoping for one set that could fit both the original summer tires, and the winter wheels I am looking at. The winter wheels do not have the larger 8.5" rear, so I was planning to select a cable set that would fit the front summers, and the rear winters. (same size). However, the manual says not to put cables on the front wheels.

Is that true for an xi and the SCC Super Z6 cables?

If I can't do front cables, does anyone suppose that a slightly smaller set of cables or slightly larger set would be a problem when using the mismatched wheels? I figure slightly smaller cables are preferable, and the tensioners would just be stretched a little farther.

Cables are required to be carried(and sometimes used) in chain control areas in California, even if you have winter/snow tires and all wheel drive.

I always thought....

...that chains always go on the drive wheels (if 2wd) or on the rear wheels with AWD...

Yes, that is correct. But if my selected cables for the winter wheels don't happen to fit the rear summer, I'm wondering if I can use them on the fronts in an emergency. Without damage. I can only imagine the warning in the manual being risk of damaging front suspension (Super Z6 is designed for low/no clearance), or just sub-optimal handling(don't care). I don't think the X-Drive is an issue, based on the marketing.

Hopefully, the cables will fit the rear summers, and just be tight on the tensioners.

In an emergency, I would like to be able to run them on the summer tires. I have winter tires ordered, and would primarily be using them on those, which they will fit no problem, since the rear will be 8" instead of 8.5".
