All I'm saying is it's not a smart financial move. You can tell yourself that losing $5000 or more on your 1 year old 330i at trade in is actually only losinging $3000, but the bottom line is you're taking a loss on the deal. Maybe it's money you feel you can afford to lose, but it's a loss, and that makes it a lousy deal. It's like over paying for your new car. And next year when the M3 rolls out, if you trade your then 1 year old 335i for it you're gonna take another hit. And you will have overpaid again for your M3. If that's ok with you then it's all good, end of discussion.
Never said there wouldn't be a loss. But the question is whether or not I consider what the additional money buys [regardless of how much] to be good value for said money.

Considering this I can't think of anything of more value/fun/entertainment that I could buy with that $3K or $4K that I couldn't buy right now anyway [and I already give away about 8-10% of gross as it is, though I suppose one can always give more and that is a good thing.].

Now consider also the facts that the bumper-to-bumper warranty [and service costs] are extended for a year and the fact that I will not have to pop for $1200 in new tires for another two years and that just makes the total package even better...

So do you think we will see an influx of Pre-Owned 330 sedans on the lot as soon as the 335 sedans come out? I doubt it but it seems from this thread people will.

Many other factors of course, but this does help rule out engines that are pure marketing (like the Japanese engines that only get rated HP at 8000 RPM, with no torque at most RPMs). I was really disappointed that the E90 only increased the HP but no torque increase over previous generation -- thats mainly marketing hype.

This turbo engine finally delivers real-world, street performance with needed torque for this heavy car. I don't even care that much about the HP figure, just the fact that this is 300 ft/lbs of torque with no turbo lag.

For people who want performance and power, the extra price premium is worth every penny for the total extra performance (+HP, +++Torque, and general street feel). For people who just want balanced luxery with some solid performance, smaller BMW engines are just fine.
Dude, you GET it! HP means little unless it is backed by torque and the 335 is a TORQUE monster...the 330 is a torque weanie...I test drove the 335 yesterday and my ZHP never seemed slower.

espically since nissan's 350z has 300Hp w/o turbos.. and gets 25- 29 mpg (my expierience)

What you haven't factored in is tags and tax (which you will have paid twice), interest over time on your "small loan" and the fact that next year you're still going to have to spring for that same $1200 for new tires. So really what we're talking about is not a savings, but delayed spending. This easily pushes your hit up to over 5 grand.

I guess in the end it really does come down to personal priorities and preferences. When I was in sales I always said a good deal is whatever the customer thinks is a good deal. I'm sure there are a lot of BMW SA's out there who are hoping a lot of folks like you think trading their new E90's in on an E92 for a loss is a good deal

Uh...Tags transfer [$25 fee] and you only pay tax on the difference between sales price and trade-in/cash payment [$46K-$40K x .06 = a whopping $350]

Interest over four years on $4K or $5K @ 5.95% [minus 2% that I will make by keeping that $4K in the market and taking out a loan] will amount to about $400 +/-

Nope, as I said I am about 10 months away from needing new tires now so it would be two years from now for new tires on a 335i.

no its not i agree. especially with those ECU coming out and exhaust and everything, we will be right there with the 335. Also our E90 330 and 325 will soon have some sort of boost. BUt on the 335 all you can do is mess with the boost on the stock turbos. So there is actually more of a chance to get more hp out of a 330 then a 335 in my opinion

I highly doubt you will be able to get anywhere near 80 lb/ft of additional torque out of the 330...TORQUE is the big difference and you won't be able to get it unless you buy a 335...which will probably be cheaper than doing all the mods to still come up short.

Yeah, let's bring it back to life!

Quote:
People, its not just the extra 45 more HP that makes this a night and day difference, its the huge incremental amount of torque that sets this apart!
This is exactly why the C6 Corvette is so ridiculously good, it's got 400/400, so it feels like the 335i's, 300/300, only moreso. I know it has to do with weight and consumption and huge displacement vs small displacement and high revs, but if they managed to get the C6 25 mpg, why can't BMW make a NA V8 that's got a closer ratio? Makes me wonder.

That said, this is why I love the 335 engine.

And before you flame me out the door, yes I know the C6 has a cheap plastic interior and no back seats. But seriously, that engine is something else.

If I ever get stationed back in Europe or even Italy, i'll sell my 330i and order myself a 335i. Thats the only place i'll benefit from the $4000 off MSRP, tax free, license free, and finally shipping free back to CONUS.
