Head Up Display

Anybody taken delivery with the HUD option? I have it on my current F10 and find it very useful, but it came with the car and I'm not sure I want to spend €1500 on the option, particularly as the fully digital instrument panel (standard here in Ireland) may be sufficient. I find it most useful in having an instant read out of exact speed without having to look at the speedo (and navigation instructions are also excellent when I use them). As always, welcome your opinions......

HUD is always the first thing I select when configuring a car. By far the best and the most useful gadget. Not only it is nice and interesting, but also it increases safety since you have your eyes all the tine on the road, no need to look at the dash or nav.

Luckily, BMW also has the best HUD on the market, so I would not even consider buying one without it.

I won't get another BMW without it. My current F30 is my 1st with it and if I get a G30 which I think I am going to do I will get it.

I don't have HUD on my X3, but I test drove a G30 last week with HUD and I thought it was excellent. I guess the only thing to think about is how useful it would be if you are usually driving routes that you are familiar with?

Thanks for all the replies, almost unanimously in favour (albeit from a small sample poll!) , confirms my bias. This forum is always a good way to justify extra spending on "essential" options!!!

If it is in your budget, fine...

If not, then IMHO I think it is not as important as other essentials...

It seems though once you have had it, it's tough not to keep it in your options list

Cheers, since your car arrives today, you can no longer give into temptations to add specs! I thought mine was locked but since I discovered it was still possible to make changes, am doing a serious amount of "man maths" processing!!

I have had on past two cars. I'm currently in a dealership car without it, missed it for about a week and, well, just forgotten after that.

It's nice but you don't need it. But it is on my incoming G30 :-)

I had to choose between ACC or the HUD (money wise on my leasingbudget) and I went for the ACC as that gives me an active protection vs hud being passive safety. I did order the extended instrument cluster which does give me the same amount of info as the hud. After driving my g30 for three weeks now I'm still happy with my choice..

I disabled the HUD on my F10 for a couple of days and quickly got used to it, although the exact speed read out in your vision is useful. I am betting on the fully digital dashboard on the new model being more than adequate... And used the saved €1500 to upgrade the audio system instead!

It does annoy me that the Volvo S90 has most of the active safety systems as standard whereas they are quite expensive options on the Beemer.. And the B&W audio costs about €5800 here versus €3700 on the Volvo....but couldn't make the change of brand after 20 years in the rear wheel drive car, particularly as Volvo now offers four cylinder cars only.

This is the first time I would have an HUD in a car (G30). I have found it extremely useful regarding navigation and keeping below speed limits and changing radio stations whilst keeping my eyes on the road. The multifunctional instrument cluster is superb but HUD somehow renders it less useful except for the aesthetics

Nice to have, but I'd prioritize a handling option before HUD if I had to make a choice.

This is from someone who has it on F'10 and my wife loves it on her X4.

...maybe in the future the HUD will be the default and the functionality of the dashboard display will be irrelevant. As far as I know Porsche do not offer a head up option so it's not the be all and end all....anyway, we'll all be in autonomous cars in ten years or so!!!

You don't need it, but it is very nice to have. I have it on my M3 and because of the type of car it is I find it very helpful not to have to take my eyes off the road to see how fast I am going.

The way it displays the Nav directions is worth the price of admission on its own. Very Very helpful.

Don't spec a car without it.
