How do I transfer my Music ?

Hi
I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice please. How do I transfer my music from my current car's hard drive to my new car's hard drive? Will I need a USB stick, if so, what do I do? I get my new 530e in 4 weeks time. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Sorry, can't help with the export, but the G30 has an import from USB function

I will caveat you that fact that you should be making sure that uploading too much files in your media drive will cause to fill up its memory and it shouldn't cause your i-Drive to slow down because I know it from my phones, I know when the memory was almost full my phones used to be too slow to fulfill its tasks .Therefore I use as all the data sent to SD Card to keep phone memory as much free space as possible .Filling up the gas tank is good for your car but filling up the memory isn't ,joking aside

If filling up the memory wouldn't cause any issues in your car then that's great

Thanks for the advise. I'm terrible with technology. How do I extract my music from my current car using the USB stick? Obviously I will need a blank USB stick, but I'm unsure where to plug it in to & what I do to retrieve all my current music.

Does anyone know how large the hard drive is? I've got the HK as well, but I'm not sure if I can get all my music on the hard drive, I've got about 30GB...

Our music was on our F31. There is an option, probably under " manage music" to save or back up to USB drive. When done, your G30 can restore or import under to same "mange music" or some such. Easy when you find the 2 relevant commands.

20 GB is available for Audio in the G30. Doesn't matter what stereo you purchased.

That's pretty low. I would have expected hundreds.

I agree that's pretty 1996, but just looking at the "standard features" list it says 200 GB for the Nav system including 20GB for Audio... Does not say if there is any additional audio storage outside the Nav.

"BMW Navigation system with 10.2" high-resolution Touch screen; 3-D maps; 200 GB hard drive with 20 GB storage for audio files;"

I somewhat agree. If I had to guess, I'd say they're using a 200GB SSD (for reliability over a spinning disk drive), and sticking with 200GB for cost reasons.

That said, can you not play music off of a USB stick? If so, what's to prevent you from just leaving a USB stick connected and using that? Then you are only limited to whatever size drive is supported. (asking b/c I don't have my car yet...but most people I know with a "recent" car can play music off of a thumb drive.)

I think so, but what would be really cool is if you could connect your phone through Bluetooth and stream unlimited amounts of Hi-Fi music through Tidal...
oh, wait...
..but yes I understand USB is much more cost effective method

But wouldn't streaming over Bluetooth completely negate the benefits of a high quality source like Tidal? [wink:wink]

Plus, your suggestion is probably only good if you want the possibility of fresh music. If you only want the same songs played over and over, the internal storage is the way to go!

You have radio and sirius for that...
You may have enlightened me, however, in that I guess I did not know that Bluetooth itself was a problem. I always thought it was the fact that most music played over bluetooth was compressed in the first place. I have done a compare of songs from Apple Music and Tidal over Bluetooth and everyone agreed it sounded much better... maybe we were just pre-conditioned to want that result (to justify my $25 per month)
I'll go do some research, thanks...

EDIT: While it has gotten better, I guess the default assumption is that there is still some loss over Bluetooth. If both the source and the receiver support aptX codec, however, I guess it is supposed to be minimal and hard to discern by normal listeners. Don't know if either iPhone or BMW use aptX.
Does anyone know if Apple CarPlay is based on Bluetooth? If not, and it is a better quality connection, then I guess I found a reason to buy it that has not been stated on the many threads related to Apple Carplay yes/no on this forum. Unfortunately it is too late unless I can add through Connected Drive later.

You can create ad-hoc wireless (wifi) connection with vehicle.

Carplay is wifi, not bluetooth.

if you save to the internal drive does it still (lossfully) compress it?. I thought on the F10 it was encoded as mp3 at 128mbps - could be wrong though.

Thanks for the responses on the size of the HDD. I am using a USB stick at the moment, so it's not a big deal.

I prefer to keep the music local to the car, then you don't have to check connections, think about any of the options and it should just start from where you left off when you left the car. I don't tend to play music on my phone, only at home and driving.

The irritating bit for me was to keep updating the stick from my home iTunes etc whenever I added new content. Streaming from phone is best if possible.

So Apple CarPlay - can it play music better than idrive via Bluetooth? Or if I have wireless hotspot configured does idrive play music through the wifi? And I can't seem to find the definitive answer on whether you can order CarPlay later on or does it have to be a Factory fit?
