Cant wait for the catless dps to get in, then stage 2 and Im done. From what Ive read is that the oem tips are spot welded on. Dont see why a muffler shop couldnt remove them and put on whatever tips you want as long as they fit the diffuser.

Boy I've come full circle in a year since my original comments and questions in this thread. I have a full Dinan system due to be installed hopefully next week. Mid pipe, axle back and valve remote.

I really wanted those double round tips. I think it pretty difficult to cut the tips off the stock exhaust and spot weld new ones in. I've only seen one person do it and they stuck out too far IMO.

My diffuser will fit the Dinan tips. I made sure of that before choosing it.

After this is done, I'm sure I'll want to know more about down pipes. You can take me to school.

Everything Joe-BMW33 said. I've seen information for installing DP's on pre-2020 models but the 2020 has different heat shields and wire routing, plus I think the coolant reservoir is in the way too. So please take your time and shoot lots of photos/video so you can school the rest of us

I've also heard that cooler plugs are preferred for DPs, especially catless. You might want to look into that.

Does adding the resonator delete pipes not the dining set up but just a cheap $150 modification at a muffler shop in any way affect the performance of the car?

I can't imagine it would get any power, but I know sometimes with exhaust modifications you can screw with the power band and you can lose low end and Dan top and or vice versa I'm just curious for those of you who have done a resonator delete by having a muffler shop, Weldon straight pipes did you notice any kind of change and how the car drove or does it drive exactly the same? ?

I found no difference in how the car drives. Just better noise in sports mode.

I just did this as well on my '21 M550. Had both resonators removed and added a custom X pipe. Definitely worth the money but not a dramatic change in sound. A little more aggressive sound and a few more burbles on downshifts in sport mode.

I recently did the res delete too and replaced with 3 inch straight pipes. Originally I wanted to do an X-pipe but the muffler shop told me they'd need to bend the exhaust brace in order to fit in 2.75 or 3 pipes so I went with straight pipes. The result is what everyone else says: no drones (big plus), no noticeable difference in comfort/eco and subtle increase in sound in sport mode. I haven't heard a drive-by sound yet but the car is so well isolated I couldn't really tell the differences inside the car. The major change would be the loud burbles.

On LCI/iDrive7 there's an option to change the engine sound which also controls the exhaust flap, so if I just want to drive fast without annoying anyone with the pops and bangs I can switch sound to "Reduced" or "Depending on drive mode". Setting to "Sporty" will give really loud cold start since the exhaust is fully open.

This is really best of both worlds and best bang for buck exhaust mods. Stealth when you want to and flexible how you want the sound turn out to be.

Unfortunately on my UK-spec car there is no option for "sporty" so I have it set to "depending on drive mode".

Really no need for an aftermarket exhaust now. No need for a burble tune. 150 bucks well spent.
Maybe this is a stupid question but will the vehicle still pass US emissions with this mod? Debating between resonator delete, Remus cat-back/axel-back, fi cat-back, army trip cat-back. Some of these exhaust systems are in the $4-5k+ range before install so if this is a safe and reliable mid for under $200 that’s pretty significant!

i took both resonators off its in sport plus, the engine sound is in sporty and it’s honestly not much difference just a bit more crackles , nothing really louder when driving , went back to shop had them put on a xpipe and still not much difference . i mean my m340i i spent 175 for a catless dp and my exhaust was perfect , this car doesnt really have a great v8 rumble , do i need to change the muffler? everyone seems happy with resonator delete. but i mean really on a 1-10 scale it went from a 2 stock up to maybe a 3 with delete even all my neighbors say its not a drastic change glad it was only 250 bucks and not alot more. i guess i was just expecting alot more sound i got a few more crackles and pops which i like but not more v8 sound and its really not any louder with or without xpipe

Yes that’s my experience as well, i suppose we need an aftermarket muffler, but 2k+ is more than i’m willing to pay for this, i like my car not to be obnoxious except when deliberate like in sport/sport+ modes, so not risking it.

catted downpipes could be good for me, but even more expensive since they come as pairs on our engines.

I have the Dinan x pipe with stock muffler. It is more muted than just a resonator delete by comparing to online videos.

I would skip any X or H configuration

Dyno comparison of stock center pipes with resonator versus Dinan X pipe (with stage 1 software) I gained 1 horsepower.
You are gaining noise, not power.

Thanks for the insight. I was going to do the stage 1 flash and catback soon. Thought about Remus or Dinan, but might just do a resonator delete if it’s not gaining or sounding much different.

the best thing for these quiet BMWs (i have 2 of them) is to install a muffler bypass valve

press a button and you get instant muffler delete, press again, back to normal

I have the same setup. In sport & sport+ I'm getting much louder pops and crackles, in comfort I don't notice any difference. I'm considering removing my x pipe as I have an annoying low frequency drone at idle. Do you experience this drone as well?

No drone at all. I only hear pops or crackles on hard accelleration in Sport or Sport+. Normal driving not much changes just a tad louder.
Note that the muffler is different on the 2020+ M550iX. The muffler is louder and apparently has less baffling than the 2018-2019.
I have a remote valve controller too, and tend to run it open occaisionally.

It helps, but removing the resonators increases the noise considerably more.
I have done both, with the stock muffler.
