Far from typical driving but just shows shat the 540 can do (if you are not in any rush!)

I have a 2017 540i and this beast is heavy. I have a 5 mile commute and do a lot of city driving or stop/go traffic. I always am in comfort mode 90 percent of the time and turn off ASS. It has been around 21.5 mpg or 21.6 mpg combined. Not every efficient indeed but based on this thread completely normal.

My family has a 2014 Toyota Sienna Van and that has a 3.5L V6 which gets 20.1 mpg combined. This is in the Washington D.C. metro area.

I am inferring from your post that your spouse is the primary driver of the Sienna and you are the primary driver of the BMW. My question is: do you drive the same way? Driving in comfort mode doesn't mean that you are light on the accelerator. I would expect the Sienna to get worse mileage if all matters are otherwise equal. But, of course, they almost never are.

Not meaning to burst your bubble but the trip computer's reported mpg can be grossly incorrect. 540 should only get about 30-32mpg max on the highway. I would not trust what the trip computer reports and only calculate the actual fuel consumption by dividing the miles traveled by the amount of gas you fill up with.

Haven't measured it way but still believe it was representative given a lot of the journey was at a constant 50 mph.

If you drive at 50 and see what the instantaneous economy is is you see it's actually pretty high.
This was very much an experiment to see what I could get and required a lot of concentration and planning ahead based upon traffic conditions. Far from typical.

My average over all miles is currently 31.1 which feels about right to me.
Agree low 30s on typical motorway journeys cruising at 70mph which is what the trip computer reports.

Short drives explains it

Even on an F30328i I was getting 18.5mpg with a 2.5 mile commute. I even got worried enough to take it to a mechanic. Once I take it on a longer trip it pops back up to 23.5.

I gave up caring about mpg in the 3 litre engines a while ago. Back in 2015, I had an m135i that I swapped for a 328i. Went from 19 mpg to 25mpg, but with my mileage, I was probably only saving like 20 quid a month, which is absolutely nothing. So, fast forward to 2018 when the last was up, 340i here I came. 20mpg.

Then a x3m40d in 2019, 29 mpg.

Now back in a petrol, x3m40i, 20 mpg

You getting good mileage, my 2017 540i xdrive stage 2 450hp, does 14mpg average in city driving, 26-28mpg on the highway. Driving like a granny with barely touching the accelerator the lowest I have seen was 16,5mpg in the city. The car only has 45k miles and it has constant maintenance done every 6k miles

So I reckon tyres that were underinflated cost me around 5mpg - worth a check
Tire pressure doesn't do much within reason. I run my 540 at 2 bar (30 psi) front and rear (inline with Goodyear recommendations), and the difference vs. BMW's suggested pressures is minimal--and the bonus is that the car no longer drives like it is on marbles.

quality of gas matters, everyone should try injector cleaner like redline si-1 esp if they only buy whatever's cheapest gas

so this weekend i completed a 410 mile round trip (90% highway speeds).

my average on the trip computer shows 30mpg, average speed 66.1mph.

Then this morning i run a quick errand, 2 miles travelled, 14.7mpg with an avg speed of 15mph...

If i dont reset the values, i think its stays around 24-26mpg

It is what it is, i just fuel up when required and enjoy the car!

My 540i with 25k miles is getting 18L/100km mostly short trips and city driving. That's about 13 MPG (US) or 16 MPG (UK). Glad I don't drive much at all because it's worse than I expected. The efficiency of these things is in highway driving.

Not really. I drive mostly on winding country roads and in the city and I average 9.3 liters per 100 km (about 25 mpg) with my G31.

If I did a lot of highway kms, that would go way up.

The engine is very fuel efficient, given the power and displacement.

He’s reporting imperial mpg or about 1.2x what we would see in the US under similar conditions. Still it’s really good.
