Steering and road feel
Has anyone felt through their steering wheel, while driving around 50 a slight feel of the front tires rotating through their cycle? It's hard to explain, can't see the steering wheel or car shake, but more like you can actually feel through the wheel the tires spinning round and round with a slight sensation through the wheel?
Wondering if this is normal?

I either recommend the dealer or a reputable tire outfit that has invested in proper Road Force tire balancing equipment and often works on high end European vehicles.

I would start by checking the tire balancing by road force balancing the tires.
And then sure, check your brakes. Potholes, bad roads and less than optimal tire pressures can do a number on your balancing.

Don't think it's the brakes cause they're smooth and doesn't change the feeling while braking and the car only has 3,700 miles.

Have you checked your tire pressure cold? Now the question is... Did the dealer took a joy drive in your car and hit something? Trust me, your shimmy is a tire balancing problem easily corrected with proper road force equipment.

does it become more noticeable when you brake? more noticeable at higher speeds?
sounds like a bent rim to me. the dealership probably took it out for a joy ride and either hit the wheel against something or drove over a nasty pothole and bent a rim slightly. if it is more noticeable at highway speeds, that's your reason. |

Got it fixed this morning. Both right side tires where off balance by a little. Enough for me to notice. Now drives smooth as butter.

I think I know what OP is describing, and I noticed this in all xDrive BMW's I have driven, to a varying degree in each. Never felt it in RWD models.

I think i have the same issue.
My car has came on summer tyres 20" RFT Michelin PS3 from factory and I haven't had chance to drive it on higher speed. Currently, my G30 LCI (530ix - 4000km on clock) is wearing winter rims 18" M + Pirelli Sottozero 3 RFT. At speeds around 100 - 140 (or 90-140) I can feel the tyres (road surface) on my wheel. It's slight tingling. I have discovered this when I cross 140km/h - then it disappears. Or even when I driver under 100 (relatively under 90) - all is good. It goes smooth as butter. Initially winter rims where dispatched with goodyear ultragrip RFT and I though the problem is related to tyres which I have replaced immediately to pirelli sottozero 3 rft. Wheels were weighted few times using Hunter Road Force with both goodyear and then pirelli at the dealership. Rather no difference. I am having no idea why is that and I am wondering if on summer set it's going to be the same? I am assuming that after swapping to Pirelli Sottozero 3 RFT I feel no difference meaning it might problem with either: - Balancing - however did few times and didn't help - Bent rim? - Wheel size - Factory is 20" while winter set is 18" - Aggressive winter tyre tread with combination of RFT transmits more to cabin, but wondering at certain speeds it's all fine.. Any suggestions what can I do? |
