Used G30 models with a $25-30k budget

Hi, New to this forum and Just wanted to get some insight on the G30 model.

I’m in the market for a used car with a $25-30k budget. At first, I was looking into A5 Sport Backs, then BMW 435+ Gran Coupes, and then came across the BMW 5 series, G30 models.

When I hear BMW 5 series, current model, I’d assume its expensive. But after doing some research its priced lower than expected, and within my budget. Comparing the A5 Sport Backs and 435+ Gran Coupes, there are a lot more choices with the 5 series.

Comparison, all CPO and under 50K miles
5 Series - bmwusa.com, 2017 as low as $25k
435+ Gran Coupe - bmwusa.com, 2017 starting $29k
A5 Sport Back – cars.com, 2019 starting $28.5k

• Is there a reason why the G30 models depreciated this much?
• It seems like I’ll get a bigger bang for my buck going with the 5 series, what are your thoughts and experiences?
• I know maintenance can be costly with BMW’s, but as long as its CPO or under its original warranty, I should be fine right?

Feel free to drop any info, experiences or opinions I should know. Thank you in advance.

Depreciation on large saloons is always a bit of a killer - makes them an outstanding used buy though when 2-4 years old... Make sure you look at a few, there are lots out there so be picky. Get one that looks like its been well cared for.

The bigger the class the bigger the depreciation.
Also you have to take into consideration which engines are we talking about.
I would never buy a new car, never ever. For example in EU a new medium equipped 5 series is around 60-70k euros, after 2 years and around 40k km, it costs between 30-35k euros.
Even without the warranty, a car will never have maintenance costs that convince me to justify the price difference.

The $25K-$30K G30s (2017) are usually the regular 530i without the "xDrive" and/or "M Sport package". As well, these tend to have limited options/packages and usually come with regular leather interior (i.e. Dakota leather) when compared to Nappa or Merino interiors. If I was looking for (let say '17-'18 540 w/ B58 engine) 95% loaded vehicle with particular color, M Sport package, and various options/packages, it would be at the low end of $50K to mid $40K with around 25K miles. At the end-of-the-day, there are many factors to consider due to different models/configurations.

Just throwing my small $0.02 out there.

When searching you need to decide if you want a 4 cyl or 6 cyl. At your budget the 8 cyl 550 is out of the question .... at least for the G30 saloon.

Then do you want AWD or RWD?

Then it comes down to luxury add ons. M-sport package (stiffer suspension and slightly more expensive upkeep and tire replacement factor) ... or non M-sport for a more luxury ride.
BUT...most important is you'll need to test drive and find your sweet spot for comfort and options desires.

When I purchased my 2017 CPO, I test drove locally and then worked a deal through email...-me drove 400+ miles and 3 states away from my home state to save $4000 compared to what was offered more locally for the options I knew I wanted.

Doing a national search on BMW for CPO cars, you should be able to find a modestly appointed 2017 or 2018 530 (AWD or RWD) in the price range you're shopping with good mileage (mid 30s and up). You can find a couple 540s (non xDrive) with minimal options and high mileage (above 40k) at that price.

Good luck to you!! And good choice on reading the forum and asking for advice.

You will be covered under any of the original warranty that is left, and then the CPO gives you an additional year passed the expiration of the original in-date warranty (with unlimited mileage).

Maintenance on a BMW is on par with the Audi that you mentioned originally. $100 synthetic oil changes (once a year or every 10k miles), fluids, wipers yearly, plus any tire issues and/or other maintenance costs as they arise. The 4cyl or 6cyl G30 engines are not plagued by the same oil issues as the 8cyl.

IMO, the bad rap that most Bimmers get on yearly costs is from the casual owners who don't take care of the issues as they arise and decide to "wait" or worse yet take the car to a 2nd rate repair facility.

FYI. These 5 series vehicles either come w/ AWD or RWD. There are no 5 series w/ FWD configuration out there, except the current 1 and 2 series.

I looked at Audi, MB, Jag equivalents before I settled on the g30. Styling slightly generic, but so are the others. Drivability? Still considered the drivers car in my opinion. Go test drive some. Even a 530i RWD is fun to whip around. If you want something smaller, check out a 330i/340i (g20, about the size of a 3rd gen Acura TL).

There are some fantastic deals out there for 5 series. I was shopping for a 540 that still had a few months of warranty and ended up getting a lease return '17 540i msport, 36k miles for $34,500. Also considered some that were cpo going for around $37k but didn't have the options I wanted.

I bought a 2017 540i in August 2020 with 27,412 miles for $42k with cpo until May 2022. The car was a true unicorn, as far as I could tell, it's not missing anything as the sticker price was 84k so depending on what 5 series means to you (30i/40i & rwd/xDrive), prices can vary.

I'd suggest going for a 540i and then tune it and you'll have more than enough power.

This is what I own - https://maxdigitalshowroom.com/web/#...JE5C35HG915662

Exactly! A new, base 530i is US$ 54,000. A loaded M550i is around $100K. Both are G30s.

I'll share my experience.

I just purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 540i for $30.9k about 2 weeks ago. It has a lot of nice options, like the Luxury package, executive package, M-sport brakes, 2 of the 3 driver assist packages, and plenty of other stuff. It was a car that stickered around $72k new. The dealer had it listed around $38k but it sat for about 40 days without selling. One day the dealer marked it down to $30.9k, I walked in, test drove, and bought it.

Part of the reason I got the car for a great price was the mileage. I bought it with 40k miles, which seems a little higher than most lease returns I have seen in the Phoenix area. However, I bought the car because I needed a car I can put a lot of miles on and enjoy in comfort. The great thing about this is, the price was lower (somewhat due to mileage, somewhat due to a lot of inventory sitting for the past 30-60 days) but it has a CPO warranty - so unlimited mileage.

I'm really happy with the purchase, as it fits exactly what I need. So, they're out there, but I am seeing most 2017-2018 540i cars around $30-$35k. If you didn't want the 540i and were ok with a 530, you will obviously get more options for the money.

Here is the dealer I purchased from in Scottsdale, AZ:

https://www.bmwnorthscottsdale.com/

From what I have seen, they will price aggressively once they want to get rid of a car, i.e. 30+ days sitting on the lot. They told me they were a volume dealer and were the 2nd largest (volume wise) in the country.

In my example, they took $7k off their advertised price once it sat on the lot for a while. I didn't even try to negotiate, it was already priced very competitively and I knew if I didn't buy it right there and then, someone else was going to. If you have the time, just use sites like cargurus.com, autotrader.com, and honestly - Ebay (lots of volume dealers list cars on Ebay) and you'll get a good feel for the market.
