GPS Tracking setting

Loaded the BMW Remote app earlier today and it said that GPS tracking wasn't enabled in the vehicle, and to go to settings to enable it. Never seen an option for that so was a bit baffled. Went outside to have a look a few minutes ago, and sure enough, a new option has appeared called "GPS Tracking". If anyone else gets confused by this because the menu wasn't there before, it's probably there now

I've been able to find the car when close but not at a distance- never had to activate the gps in the car per say

the reported change doesn't seem to be showing on my iPhone app (v3.1.3) with a Mar 14 build car (yet). I get the "can't show car as >1.5 km away " message

edit- not been to my car today so can't check if there is a new menu

yep, new menu option on mine. Don't know if it works further away than 1Km now but I suspect not.

Odd that it mentions the owners handbook when this is a new option added in the last couple of days. Unless the BMW pixies have updated my manual in my filing cabinet too, I somehow doubt that it's mentioned in it!

1.5KM limit has gone! Happy days!

Of course this isn't very useful for theft recovery because the first thing a thief will do is disable it in the car

Good point, well made

You would think it would have to be activated & deactivated from the app & not in car

Or ideally both, they can manage to do similar with the registration of a car to a connected drive account so it's technically possible.

The other thought I had was the system could alert you if the GPS had been turned off, you could then alert the police that the car has been pinched. Probably too late though.

Would be good if you could set times that the car shouldn't move, eg parked up at night, or left for longer periods.
Then if the car moved it could alert you. Would eat into the tracker market I guess, but surely has to be the way forward?

You could then alert the rozzers

So mine hasn't updated and I can't figure out how to get it to update over the air, it only gives me the option to update via USB.

Any ideas guys?

Same here. I've completed an update via USB that said my current version was up to date but I can't find the 'enable GPS' option.

Whilst I think the option just isn't on my car currently, can anyone confirm where in the iDrive menu the enable GPS option is, just in case I've missed it?

Thanks, mine definitely doesn't have that.

According to BMW's website, I have the latest iDrive software so I really don't know how to proceed with this function.

You've registered for remote services online right?
You need to log in and tick the box under services.
It then says a message on the screen about activating GPS tracking in the car.

There is nothing about this that I can see.
Is this the page you are talking about?

Garage List
2017 BMW M4 CP  [10.00]
Late May 2013 build, so just before the 'large knob' update.

Just updated through the connected drive in the car and it did a data transfer and said software updated.

No GPS option in the settings. so it looks like I'm still limited to a mile or so.

I wonder if via coding you can leave GPS tracking enabled, but remove the option from the idrive?
