2018 BMW M550 Engine/Rod Knock
Unfortunately, I have a dreaded engine knock. I got a few different opinions and after the engine was taken apart, the only option seemed to be a new engine. The engine scoring in cylinder 5, 6, 7 was said to be beyond a point where the engine could be saved (see attached). The car stills runs and drive, and performance seems fine, despite the obvious engine knocking noise. I wanted to get any additional opinions on how to fix the issue. Is a new engine the only solution? My current plan is to sell the car with current issues mentioned, however, I wanted to take one last attempt at a fix as I really would like to keep it however, I'm not sure I want to pay for a new engine.

Oh boy, I'm sorry for your troubles. That does look rough. Can I ask how many miles on it and when did you notice the knocking? Did you have it tuned? Would you say you drove it hard?
My 2018 just turned the clock on factory 4 years and entered CPO. I'm guessing your factory warranty was up in the last 6 months or so. If could be worth a trip to the dealer and a call to BMW NA. They may goodwill you some relief. If your warranty was just up recently, they may cover it. Something like this didn't just start last week but had to be progressive.

Thomas, check out this thread for 2018 M550 knocking. Seems to happen around 60k miles. At least 2 other cars affected, but they both had Dinan tuning also. Not sure if that is a cause, or coincidence, but you can get advice from people going through the same situation as you. Hoping for the best for you and BMW should step up if this is common.

It has 43k miles on it but I am the 3rd owner. I would say it was driven pretty hard and does have a JB4 tune installed.
However, I have this on my MB and it has never given me any issues. Last edited by thomas96; 02-07-2022 at 05:27 PM.. |
