Hello Guys,

Question, I bought a used 2018 M550i with 37K miles on it a couple of days ago. I started to realize that shifter won't flick to M/S mode. It feels like something is block in it. P-R-N-D they are all working smoothly but I can't put it on M/S mode. I researched everywhere but I didn't see a similiar issue anybody had before. I previously had 2011 328i and had a wiring issue with D/S mode but in this case it's completely different it looks like something is stuck in there. Anyone have any idea what's the issue or seen a post mentioning a similar issue to this?

This may be a bit too obvious, but if it were my car I would take it to my dealer and ask them about it. It is possible that they have run into this and would know how correct it. Just a thought. I have personally not run into this condition in all my years of owning and selling BMWs. --Bob

Update,

After diagnoition, I was told that entire shifter box needs to be replaced. Part price is around $1500 and labor $600 at BMW dealer.

I'll stick around with sport and sport plus for a while

Ouch. They say how/why that could happen?

Just get a used shifter assembly from eBay or a junk yard.

Certainly worth a shot. I saw several on ebay for a few hundred dollars. Probably a local independent BMW shop would install it for you if it is too hard to do by yourself. --Bob

I found some pre-owned ones on ebay around $150, it think it's worth to try

they've seen the same issue on 2018 m550is in the past but not very often. they didn't mention anything specifically. Probably it could be owner error. I think previous owner had some issues and it failed after I purchased it.
