G31 - 5 series wagon… import???

Just curious, has anyone ever imported a vehicle from Europe? If someone wanted a G31 bad enough, could they just buy one overseas and have it imported to the US??

Though I have never tried, it is supposedly quite difficult to do this with cars less than 25 yrs old.

I figured. That's really dumb. There should be a process for it. Even if it costs a few grand plus the logistics, there should be an avenue. If BMW doesn't think there's enough market to sell a G31 in mass quantities, there should be a special order option.

I think they know there's a market - multiple competitors have wagons - but they also know it would cut into their X3 and maybe X5 sales here and their margin is probably better on those, since they make them here and don't have to import them.

It is illegal and you likely won't be able to register it in the US. The 25 years refers to a law that allows cars older than 25 years to be imported.

So by the time I can import a g31 to the US, they will have destroyed all the gas powered cars and Exxon will be a wind farm company. Sweet.

They could do like 1,000 of them a year for the US and put a premium on them. At least it would get some in circulation.
