Anyone come from an M5 or e63 to an m550i

Been reading and studying everything I can find on the m550. Seems be a nice blend of performance and luxury/comfort. I’m also pondering an M5 but wonder if I’ll find it too stiff/wound up on a daily basis.

Anyone bought/drive an m550 after an m5 or e63 that can speak to their impressions?

(I did have an ‘07 e63 - it was a beast).

2019 F90 M5 non comp right here.... now with the 2020 M550 available with the M sport differential and a new 520 hp engine, i am beginning to think pretty hard about a downgrade since I hate how rough the ride is in my M5! I will definitely wait for the 2021 LCI 550 to see if I make the move or not!

That is exactly why I opted for the M550i. I love the M5, but it is not a comfortable DD.

That’s my concern. I drove a ‘19 M5 on a test drive, and just didn’t think I would want it every day around town. Wasn’t sad when the test drive ended. So, I’m guessing a 2020 m550 with the sport differential might be the perfect answer.

(Disclosure: Then I read the “m550 to M5” thread on the M5 board and worry I would be missing out - haha.)

I’m 10 years older than when I had the ‘07 e63, which was pretty smooth/comfortable. Those were the days when AMG cars seemed focused only about the motor - still drove/felt like a regular E-Class car, just with a rocket motor. Felt luxurious, but fast. (The ‘19 e63 I drove recently also felt too wound up and stiff for a DD to me).

Wishing my local dealer had an m550 with dynamic handling package for a test drive, but closest one at a dealer is 3 hrs away, so I’m stuck trying to read all that I can, as well as ask questions. Appreciate the thought.

Maybe I’m just old (at 49).

Coming of a 640HP CTS-V, I feel like 2020 M550i is in the Goldilocks zone. I've owned enough cars that are always on edge, current CTS-V being one of them. I have nothing to prove, I already own one of the most powerful sedans made. What I'm looking for is a fast luxury car (a muscle car), as AMG was at one point, that won't beat me up for no reason.

If you need people to see the M badge or if you feel somewhat less because you don't have the most raced out version of the car, then you should go for the M5. For me, the M550i will do, will cost less, and will keep me out of (some) trouble.

If I could get M5 for no extra cost, I probably would. Seems like there were a few 2019s with amazing deals, but I'm not paying extra for what M5 has to offer, although I easily could. There's no way that I'd use what M5 has to offer over the M550i on the streets, I'd go to jail, and I don't really have time for consistent track visits.

At least that's how I feel now.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I don’t have anything left to prove either. I grew bored with the Ferrari 458 which I had at my disposal, and have lived the “my car is FASTER/BETTER/MORE EXPENSIVE” life (which is ultimately unsatisfying, mind you) with a handful of 7-series and AMG cars. Not worried about anyone other than me, and since I’m not a track guy, guessing m550 is plenty of HP, as well as easier on my body.

Good luck on the bar exam. My only advice is to try to take two if you can - makes you more marketable, and you’ll never know more than you do now.

LOL... at this time I feel as if I don't know enough for just one, but I still got 5 weeks to go. Here in NV it's a 3 day exam. It's overwhelming to say the least.

Back in ‘95, I took two in the same week. Kentucky was Monday/Tuesday. I drove 3 hours that night to Indianapolis and Indiana exam was Wednesday/Thursday. Somehow passed both. Craziest week of my life.

You got this. It’s just a quiz. Haha.

I just bought my 19 M5 a few weeks ago so haven't really pushed it.....but, yeah, the suspension is definitely more firm than my M550i.....but I actually prefer that. My wife definitely noticed the difference between the two, as well (she doesn't prefer the M5, LOL).

I love the M5....I felt the M550i was actually a bit too boring for me, but I've had a lot of M models and I think I was just used to the handling and suspension. The M550i is still a great car....plenty of power....but make no mistake, the M5 is basically a race car.

I did and it’s a lot more expensive than the M5.

I only took one, back in 1973. One is enough.

If you are not going to track the car, I think the 540i is a better choice. All the power one needs for public streets but lighter and more maneuverable.

I have the DPs and they sound great paired with exhaust.

Fitment is rough though.
