F90 M5 shifter in G30! (Uh-oh.)
Yeah, so, about that.
Install went flawlessly, but all is not entirely well. While I certainly didn't expect all functions to work (higher shift points is an M only feature), I did feel confident that everything else would work. () Unfortunately, I am unable to access Sport mode via the shifter. It's D only. (I can get in sport mode via the dynamic sport button, of course.) Also, manual mode (up-downshift) only works when you hold the shifter up or down. One-push shifts hold for a second and then defaults immediately back to D. If you hold the shifter up or down, you can hold that gear, but you can't travel multiple gears that way. Obviously, none of this is ideal for engine braking or other manual-preferred driving situations. Any thoughts? Do I need coding? If so, where would I even turn for that? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thank you for your help! |

I get that you want to get your standard features back, I just don't understand why you wanted to do this in the first place. You knew that M5 features wouldn't work from the start, so what is the point of doing it? Even if you get your normal features back, you're still going to be stuck with a shifter that has useless buttons on it. I'm all for functional modding, so what am I missing? Why do something that you absolutely know won't work?
My suggestion on how to fix this unnecessary problem: Put your old shifter back. Last edited by bMm5w; 01-14-2020 at 10:07 PM.. |

If you must know, the shifter in the 2018-19 M550 is the same generic shifter that exists across the BMW product line. It's unworthy, IMHO. For me, the M5 shifter completely transforms the interior, and based on the YouTube I linked to, I had no reason to suspect any functionality would be lost (beyond shift point on the M). |

The M5 shifts in a different direction than the M550i for purposes of reverse, etc....I'd bet that's a huge issue. Not sure something like that can be coded......seems like probably way more trouble than it's worth, especially if it's actually no longer letting you do basic stuff.

Wasn't the F90 M5 a DCT?
All this stuff is software, so functions from the shifter are going to send codes to the computer. I suspect that you'd have to get way deep in the bowels of the TCU to make those changes, and not only can we not get the code for that, it's really not something that I think anyone should do outside of ZF and BMW.

Pushing the sport button alone does not maximize the transmission's ability on the M550i. You have to go to sport plus via the sport button, and also move the shift lever to the left. You have lost this ability, and the drivelogic buttons intended for the DCT probably won't ever work with the ZF8. Forget asthetics when they adversely impact performance, and change it back. YMMV.

Even if set to sport plus, it has been my experience on my M550 that you still get a "sportier" mode for the transmission if you move the lever to the left. In a full M car, you can program one button to change everything, inclucing one of the drivelogic settings for the transmission, which those little buttons on the front of your shifter would normally control in a DCT. No so in an M550. You have to push the button and move the lever.

Easy to test - put your car in sport+, maintain a steady speed and revs. Push the shifter to the left, watch the revs increase as the gearbox shifts down. Push the shifter back to normal position and watch the gearbox change up again. |

I also noticed on the video that the dude didn't even try to show how it goes into sport mode... thus, it might not be doable...

Everything can be coded and it will work just like in an M5... you just need to know what to code... good luck and keep us posted as this is an interesting project... If I would switch my M5 to a non M BMW, the shifter would be the first thing that would annoy the hell out of me so being able to retrofit an M shifter onto a non M car is brilliant! |

Clearly, the shift handle has the three Drivelogic position switches that the DCT has. I have no idea what the F90 has, but this shift handle appears to be for a DCT. I don't think you can code a ZF8 to do what a DCT does. I also love the asthetics of this handle, but would not trade that for functions of my ZF8. YMMV.
