Apple Car Play

BMW 5 G30. I find that the car screen keeps changing between the Apple Car play screen and the BMW screen I have set. Is there a way to set the preference to the screen applicable when I previously switched off the ignition? The car did not come with Apple Play, but I downloaded it (at a cost of $300) via BMW.
