Wheel and Tire Protection

Hi All,

First time post...

About to sign a deal on a 2018 540x with M Sport Package. Getting out of my 2015 x5. I had a 535 before that and went through 6 tires due to pot holes etc. in 3 years. I did not have insurance on the 535 but do on the x5 (I was scared of the 535 experience). I did not use the insurance on the x5. Question is... do I get it on the new 540? The tires on the 535 were GY 40's (which I think were notoriously fragile). The new 540 has Conti and they are 40's too.

If the recommendation is to buy the insurance, what is the best I can expect to pay for it?

Thank you!

Insurance is likely to trigger many comments. It is all about risk and your tolerance and wallet.

I added it to my M550iX the moment I saw those skinny sidewalls and $700 wheels. I paid around $1,700 for tire/wheel coverage as well as key loss replacement and ding repair.

Dealer offer (so far)

Thank you for your insight.

The dealer quoted me two options...

BMW program for 1499 (MSRP 2199) or a 3rd party for 1382.

I am not sure who the 3rd party is but it includes cosmetic damage to the wheels too and there is no deductible.

Thoughts?

Sounds like good pricing. Check the fine print details of both - including any limits on use, pre-conditions for reimbursement, requirement to use a BMW center, transferability, refund of unused portion if car sold, etc.

I chose a third party one sold by my dealer as it had better coverage and less limitations. I think the official BMW one has gotten less beneficial of late.

i had a 650 Gran Coupe of 3 years and didnt get wheel and tire ins.
biggest mistake
went threw 6 tires and 3 rims ..
some of the tires had to be replaced simply because i hit pothole and the tire had a bubble in the side wall
and also bmw wheels 351 bend very easy from the hub

i currently have three bmw leased in the family and they all have wheel and tire

also dont forgot if you scuff any of the wheels during the lease... you are charged to fix or replace the wheel at the end of the lease

wheel and tire insurance highly recommended

It is a rip off IMO and there is an alternative route, especially if you only go through tires.

Right after I bought my car, I went to Discount Tire and purchased their tire warranty which covers road hazards. They inspected my brand new car and sold me the warranty. Not many people are aware that Discount sells warranties for brand new cars with factory installed tires.

The cost of the warranty for my 535 M Sport was around $300

Here is a link:

Then for winter use, I bought 17" brand new OEM BMW take offs w/ TPMS for $800 and they have been mainly on my car which I will sell afterwards and get some $$$ back.

Having said all of that, I have never bent a rim, blew a tire or got a sidewall bubble with the messed up roads we have in Seattle.

If you are not destroying your wheels, go to discount tire (assuming they exist on your side of the country) and buy their tire warranty.

I have always declined it, but I got the Tire and Wheel protection (it also includes cosmetic wheel damage, glass and paintless dent removal) for the first time with my 2018. Three months in, I bent a wheel and "bubbled" a tire. The bill came to ~$1,300 for the new tire/wheel. Zero deductible, new 20" tire and wheel installed at the dealer. Mine is not the BMW plan, but the dealer sold it to me when I got the car - EasyCare is the plan. I was expecting them to say they would repair the wheel... Pleasantly surprised - the dealer called them and they approved the repair without any fuss. I usually get the Discount Tire warranty too for my other cars, but it doesn't cover the wheels - and you have to buy it again with every new tire purchase.

So, i pulled the trigger and purchased the wheel and tire insurance. Looking at those 40's and living in the northeast, and having gone through 6 tires on my 535 a few years ago... I thought it best. Cost me about 1500 with tax. I opted for the non-BMW plan the dealer offered as it was less money and had no deductible. Also includes curb rash repair.

Hopefully I get some use out of it.
