The new 4/M4 thing is a crime. Hoping in real life metal/plastic it looks better. In pics though. oof.

You'd wonder how did it get such thick headlights in the first place

I don't know, perhaps it's just me, but I really enjoyed the days when "grills" on cars were actually functional pieces. Especially on performance cars. Yeah, I get the whole electric car situation. It is one thing that bugs me about my X3 M40. But thankfully, that's now my wife's car 😆. I just love walking up from the front of the M and see light pass through each one and having a cooler, intake, vent it leads to. But I suppose a car without even a fake, closed piece of plastic would just make it look like one of those cave salamanders with no eyes...

That bugs me too. I understand large grills for massive cooling requirements/intake whatever. But non-functional cosmetic nonsense bothers me. When I first saw the g20 grills close up and noticed the top was just solid plastic... blehk.. Reminds me of the hood vent stickers.

I'm very happy to see new grill design is coming to G30!

Both the regular LED and the ICON adaptive are being upgraded, however not necessarily for the better. The ICON are switching over to laser but also to a very generic corona ring design, if we can still call them that, which might as well have come from VW or Jag or many others. Basically each DRL design evolution has had BMW relentlessly chipping away at the corona rings, until reaching a bare minimum which cannot be reduced any further or else the 'rings' would just become straight lines:
<_><_> 5/6 of hexagon
<_/<_/ 4/6 of hexagon (2013 4er Concept - most of today's lineup)
<_<_ 3/6 of hexagon (2019 3er - chipping away should have stopped at this stage)
\_\_ 2/6 of hexagon (2020 LCI 5er and LCI 6er GT)

Well, much can be said about the size of the kidney these days. It's easy to see the difference in design language to a more bolder and expressive look. But alot of these larger kidneys are well made, besides the 7 and X7. It actually gives an impression that the 5 and the coming LCI are dated and not up to par to the new design BMW have these days. Just look at the highly succsesful G05.
G30 are a really boring car, perhaps the dullest 5 ever made, it's got no personlity or charisma, looks like the LCI will not improve the situation?

The 7 LCI is one ugly car. What a disaster.

Not much changes, if any major I'd wouldn't be happy, current g30 is the best looking car they ever made in this and I'm happy with what I got and will be until it dies. Lol

Isn't the top part just blend in with hood line anyway? The rest function just like g30 right (ie auto on and off based one engine temperature/speed etc)

I am getting really, really sick of this new design language. I hate the new angel eyes - if you can even call them that. They look so cheap and not at all like a bmw.

The top of the "grill" is an extension over the actual grill, to avoid the "broken hood line" of the prev gen. But the actual hood is still just as high/back, and the front plastic is just as large for pedestrian safety. Just meant to look like more grill.

I wonder how many pedestrians are actually hit by cars and what country has the most.

If BMW is so in love with the 4 series concept type grille why did they not put it on the new 5 series. I suspect it is because they sell a lot more 5 series than 4 series.

Or this LCI design was signed-off/approved before the 4 series concept... these cars are not all on the same development schedule. Plus, the target demographic for the 4 and 5 is different, as well.
