If BMW is so in love with the 4 series concept type grille why did they not put it on the new 5 series. I suspect it is because they sell a lot more 5 series than 4 series.
So glad they didn't ruin the 5, if these latest spy shots are anything to go by.
Maybe they can afford to take risks with the 4 in a way that they can't with the 5, certainly in terms of volume?
From a selfish point of view, I'm just relieved that I can still go for a 5 again next year (currently in a 440i).
I'd ruled out having another 3 again after seeing various G20s in the metal and the 4 Concept is a horror story so it was down to whether the 5 LCI would escape CGRS (crazy grille resizing syndrome). Must have been inoculated just in time

Either way, designing your cars for the Chinese market only is a terrible idea IMHO. Alienating the rest of the world to cater to China is a losing strategy. BMW cannot survive with the Chinese market alone.
Why everybody think they represent everyone else's taste?
Didn't 7 series sales go up after big grill? Doesn't X7 selling well?
Yes, and Yes. Big grills look much better and they are the new design trend.
You like big grilles and you cannot lie. !

X7 sales have NOTHING to do with grille size and EVERYTHING to do with being a new model that buyers have been awaiting for years.

Tell us again about 7 series sales ... appears they are already dipping in September and the YTD is being dragged down as well. New data should be here momentarily for October.

The 5-series is BMW's best selling model in the world if I'm not mistaken (when you include the estate/wagon version). Automotive manufacturers typically don't mess with success in their best sellers. Hence, the relatively tiny LCI change to the grill, headlights, taillights, and bumper on the 2021 5er.

From >50 feet away you'll need better than 20/20 vision to see the difference between a '20 and '21 model when these come out.

Looking forward to it - like some previous posters, I find the base G30 design fairly boring without M treatment and a dramatic color – exactly why I invested the extra money in frozen arctic gray. Turns it from nice to hot.

Best selling model so if it ain't broke, don't fix it!! Sensible philosophy

This is also the reason you almost never see a major design change in something like the Ford F-150. Ford can't afford to alienate buyers of their biggest seller.

Check out 2009 vs 2019:

They look to have the same 7 series style upgrade, they grow vertically. Not to the extent of what is coming to poor 4 series prospective upgrade buyers, but still a bit too big. I think Audi is barely pulling off its Auto/Union inspired big grille, but BMW should have thought a little bit better about integrating historically tall grille. Like the whole face looks like a pug (the dog).

Wow it seems the G generation has a faster LCI as compared to previous F Gen. Usually LCI comes the 5th year but now its like the 3.5 years.

M5 should be understated and boring IMO. Sort of it's whole ethos.

Of course we are now in the Chinese wealth flaunting era of cars so it's all about showing off.

That's a yikes from me dawg.
Chinese, Russian and Middle Eastern all have 'exquisite' taste for cars. And when i mean 'exquisite' , its like to them money talks, not the car design and emotion. Lol. Look at the previous gen and current gen Bentley Flying Spur. Its basically design for those ppl.

Lol. Lol. I know right ... I was ducking for cover but nothing so far yet. I just can't see BMW smacking that giant grill (like the one in the leaked photos) onto the iconic M3. And how about a license plate? That in itself will make it look double ugly. Fortunately in Nevada where I live we can run without a front plate. I'd be pissed if I had the drill and bolt one on to the front of my M3CS

I ordered a 2020 530e because I was afraid the LCI would have a 7-series size grill. What I see in the photos looks OK.

Looks pretty good but to me those headlights will be confused with volkswagens from a distance. Reminds me of the mkIV golf
