If any of those cars are EVs then presumably with lithium batteries onboard that's going to be a nightmare to put out

Yep..I think the solution is just to let it sink...no environmental hazard there. Ever get inconvenienced by having to stop on the highway because of an accident...till they cleared the mess out? It's my understanding that the fire department can't touch those lithium batteries for about 5 hours. That would make for a nice afternoon traffic jam.
