Transmission Problem - MPPSK (RESOLVED)

After having the MPPSK fitted for around 1 year now I have just been on 400 mile trip and noticed that the Transmission has starting holding in gear longer than normal in SPORT MODE.

So much so that after accelerating to say 5k rpm it was not upshifting. Gentle driving in SPORT MODE it would up shift at 3K rpm.

On the motorway it was choosing to cruise in 6th gear.

Also it is very jerky when changing down a gear.

Need to get it to the dealers for them to check, but has anybody else had this problem?

Tried to do the transmission relearn by holding the accelerator down with just the ignition on, but not sure it actually does anything.

Holding lower gears is usually a performance process. Even on my 530e, without MPPSK, in sport mode it cruises in 7th gear.

I understand that, but on this last trip something has changed and the engine was revving all the time and was reluctant to upshift.

Following this thread, no issues with my MPPSK, just curious what the dealer has to say.

Yea I'd be keen to follow this as well. Don't quote me, but I think the shift logic learns and adapts over time (based on your driving style). Maybe something has gone haywire on that front. I know MB had similar issue and there was a procedure for resetting it. The dealer should be able to help.

Did you accidentally double-press and go into Sport Plus? I think Sport Plus holds shifting a bit longer than even Sport.

If dealer doesn't find any fault codes, they'll likely upgrade your iStep level. Let us know how it goes.

Hi,

I've driven almost 13000 kms with my MPPSK and can report no issues. I feel sorry for you and hope it gets resolved well.

A couple of venues for you to explore before the dealer sorts you out:
  1. Change the Sport Individual menu to put transmission in comfort. Select that and see whether the shifting pattern changes
  2. Plug in an OBD adapter and check for any errors using BimmerCode, BimmerLink or similar. Does it report anything? Errors should be easily visible.

Do let us know how this issue gets resolved!

It maybe because I was double pressing the Sport button!!

I forgot about that. (embarrassed)

I am running the Alpina display and didn't notice it changing as the display where it shows the mode is very small and faint.

I haven't been on a long enough drive to test it properly to see if that IS the reason, but thank you TreyWaters for the heads up on this.

Do let us know if that indeed was the issue!

I am using the Alpina display also and I know exactly what you mean about a faint display area. I am not sure why the Alpina shows that way.

Yes seems to have been the 'issue'. Having tried switching between Sport and Sport Plus definitely changes the shift behaviour quite a lot. In Sport mode it shifts as expected.

However.....

One other small issue I have noticed with BOTH my G31 540i (MPPSK) and my wife's G30 540i (Standard) is when driving down a certain road close to our house, the car jolts sometimes as though the drive is re-engaging!

The road in question is an inclined road where we turn down off a level road. Normally we just let the car slowly (20-25mph) roll down the hill with the momentum, then when you gently apply the foot brake or accelerate there is a jolt.

Don't know if someone else has also has felt this? Maybe an Xdrive quirk?

Phew, glad it could be solved this way! The 540 is so refined otherwise that any changes to shifting patterns are immediately noticable..

Hmm, is that in comfort, sport or efficient mode? If you drive in efficient it coasts and when it senses an incline/decline it reingages the gearbox. That can sometimes be felt as a little jolt?

Never use efficient (Eco) mode so I don't think it's that.

Most of the time is a little jolt, but if I had 3 passengers in the car the other day and it was a HARD Jolt!

It was funny, 30 seconds before they commented how smooth the car was.
