This morning the idrive displayed the coolant level low message when I started the car. While topping off the coolant level is no biggie, I was a bit surprised, since I've only had my car for about 4 months, with about 5k miles. Is this common? Happened to any of you?

This was common in the 340i, same engine as yours...B58? I had evidence of coolant leaking around one of the coolant caps. Topped off at the dealer without allowing it to cool down and I had a coolant low warning again. Went back to the dealer and they gave me a bottle of coolant to take home so I filled it up after the engine cooled down. It hasn't happened since. In a few cases, mine included, I think it was a slightly loose cap.

Opened the caps and the coolant level were quite low in both reservoirs. Both below the minimum. Definitely surprised how low they were.

Happened to me too, B58 engine, there is a TSB for it. There is air somewhere in the system from the factory. Both of my tanks were completely empty, and there was some evidence of coolant dried around the cap. Dealer topped it off, has not come back (2500 miles and counting).

Does this affect the B46/48 2 liter turbo as well?

Just came on for me this morning 6,100 miles. Stopped by dealer and they topped off. Will have to monitor to see if there is a leak.

I have received the coolant low two times now in the following month. The first time I was able to add some coolant in the smaller reservoir to the left when facing the engine from the front of the car. However, the larger reservoir, to the right, I am unable to open it. I'm wondering if I am missing something about how to remove that cap? I twist it counterclockwise to misalign the arrows but then it doesn't want to move anymore nor can I pull it straight up. Any help is appreciated as the manual is useless.
I'm new to BMW so forgive me for any ignorance I may be showing. And yes, I did Google this but came up empty handed - not one video or instruction on how to remove that cap.
Thanks...

Btw, I have a 2018 540i, bought with 4900 miles CPO, now has about 8500 miles..

That should be the way to open it; maybe try pushing down and turning? Could have some interlock like a medication bottle.

Did they figure out what's causing it or come up with a solution? I'm guessing not as mines a 2018 and still an issue

Not for what I have seen here or other forums.

Ya I've been having the same issue but when I got my car back they diagnosed it as having charge air cooler pressure failure.

But it definitely looks like a coolant leak to me.
I've had the car serviced twice and it keeps happening.

You think it could be a lemon?

It's a defect that seems to plague the B58 engines. Who knows if it is an inherited design fault.

Are there any B58 owners whose cars doesn't leak coolant?

Mine does not! 16000kms here, one summer with severe temperatures and several V-max runs, not a hiccup.

While happy that it has been problem-free I am a bit worried, reading through this thread.

My first impression was that air pockets could've formed from the factory, but seeing leaking cars makes me nervous...
