Ok just spoke to an BMW independent shop (dealer service desk is like no one there the day after thanksgiving) supposedly 2019/2020 vehicle are all getting the new green coolant and it's not advised to mix... and no one sell that new part yet, so guess have to take to someone to drain first...
I'm still confused on this green vs blue coolant? I spoke to a couple of different dealers and they say the coolant is blue... I purchased a bottle of BMW coolant and it's clearly blue but unless all of a sudden I'm color blind the coolant appears green in my 2019 540. My SA told me it may appear green in the reservoir but it's really blue coolant which sounds ridiculous to me. As a result, I only added distilled water to be safe until I can bring it in for service in a few weeks. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Sad to see BMW still can't make a reliable expansion tank since my E46 days!

A buddy's B58 equipped 340i has some purple looking coolant in his secondary inter cooler coolant expansion tank. Dealer says it's normal. Mine is fine. Anyone else notice a weird color in their secondary cooking circuits?

I've got the issue too. Started another thread before seeing this one. I thought the B58 was the most reliable and best engine ever? Now I'm wondering if I should get one in next car or not.

My main reservoir was low when I checked Sunday so the dealership told me to take it in... Picking it up tomorrow morning so will see what they say / what they have replaced. Not all bad though - they gave me a M850i Gran Coupe for the day, what an awesome machine that is!!

So my annual oil change came up, got a new service advisor and got the guy to do additional check while they had the oil change done.

They ran a full day pressure test, can't find any leak so far but the pressure level did drop tiny bit, so it's going to sit dealer for least another day to see what's the cause

Got mine back today and they couldn't find anything. Passed the pressure test fine, and no leaks coming from anywhere... its a mystery. They did say it was "within spec" for it to lose a little bit of fluid over time. I didn't ask how it can be ok for a sealed system to lose fluid - but will keep my eye on it!

given how often we're suppose to change coolant these times I found this explanation a bit perplexing...

This happened to me earlier in the year on my 2019 540ix with less then 5k miles. Then it went away but came back recently right before the cars one year maintenance. I ask BMW service the same question. Just 1 year and 5k miles???
They told me that there are two coolant tanks and that this is common because it's used to cool the turbos and they run hot.

Don't know but I took him at his word.

ok, so they tested multiple times and saying it's holding pressure, guess then I would question how did the first "a bit dropping in pressure" comment come from...

guess I'll leave it for now and if I ever see another low coolant message would definitely raise hell...

I am telling you guys... I had to add coolant every 6-8 months on my 530i. It was a slow leak but a leak nevertheless.

Oil change visit 2 weeks they discovered my water pump leaking and one of the turbo cooler lines as well. It will only get worse if not tackled.

They know you have a leak but they are dragging their feet until it gets worse, which it will.

It is no secret that water pumps are failing in the B-Series engines as early as 15K miles.

Question.

Out of interest, Why are there 2 reservoirs for the coolant? 2 completely different systems and if so for what?

Yes - 2 completely separate systems - one for the intercooler and one for the engine cooling. For me (and I think all of us) is the engine circuit that seems to have the magic disappearing coolant!

Also the engine's main water pump in the B-Series engines is mechanical (Opposed to electric as it was in recent past) but the turbo's own water/cooling pump is still electric.

For me it was both systems with disappearing coolant. Engine water pump leak and turbo line coolant leak.

Amazes me that dealers having access to a well known and documented PUMA case refuse to fix leaky components in the cooling systems of these cars.

Do not accept answers such as :

"They all do it"

"The engine and turbo consume coolant every few months this based on driving habits"

Pure unabated BS. Be polite but firm and escalate as necessary... Shop foreman, service manager, BMWUSA.
