Picking up 19 530e. Is driving assistance plus worth it?

Will it be like tesla auto pilot?

Will it really drive or is it really behind?

I have a 2018 530e. The ACC is terrific and I use it a lot. On the other hand, the lane assistant does not keep the car centered and will let it slightly cross over a lane before jerking you back. The lane assistant is only useful as an assistant.

So...no the 530e still expects us to drive it, thank goodness.

I think as far as level 2 goes, Tesla is probably best, though did heard good thing about MB's system.

think ACC on everyone is pretty good these days though

It's ok. The traffic jam assistant is the best part of it.
Don't expect it to drive you to the shops as it's just level 2 autonomous.

Remember it's designed to be used with your hands on the wheel so using it without doing that it strictly beyond what it is designed to do (I know we all do)
So don't get your expectations up but try it out on a car and see if it's what you want.

It depends what your expectations are.

If you're expecting it to drive itself like a Tesla with autopilot then you'll be disappointed.

If you aren't expecting it to drive itself and understand that it's a Drivers "Assistance" package then for $1,700 I think you'd consider it probably worth the money.

Consumer Report which does objective testing think Cadillac's Super Cruise system is the best.

Here is the actual CR article if you are a subscriber:

And CR just tested the latest version of Autopilot with Navigate (auto lane change) and find it to be error prone and dangerous.

Tesla does OTA update better than anyone and they have more mile driven on their system (while data being collected) than anyone as well, I won't believe the "all hardware are there just need to code/improve claim", but do think Tesla is the only one can consistently constantly improving

Makes sense, but have you mentioned the lane drifting to dealer and asked for an istep upgrade to confirm this is the best BMW can do with lane keep assist?

Not sure what you mean by "istep" but in December when my car was in for its annual service my dealer did a software update. Is that what you mean?

And don't get me wrong. I was answering a specific question. I have all the safety "nannies" and I am not afraid of that term. I ordered my car specifically with the features I want and I would order them again. I use ACC frequently and while my mirrors are adjusted properly, I also use the blind spot monitor all the time as well. But using the lane assistant is too stress creating for me as it swerves me at or just over the line and back. With stereo cameras in the upper windshield, I don't understand why it is so hard for the car to stay centered.

You need to try the car for yourself as only you can decide if it's worth it or not. Assuming you can find a car with this specified.

Istep is a like a software level.
I had mine upgraded last year with no differences detected.
Whether there has been any improvements since I don't know

I really think you need your system calibrated by the dealer if it's constantly drifting over lane markings. I use LKA quite a lot and have absolutely no problem with it. It keeps the car centred for me. I know the car has tendency to follow left lane markings at exits, but that's not an issue for me as I keep an eye on the road and treat it only as an Assistance system than a self drive.

Thanks. I will ask for it to be calibrated next time I take it in.
