Top Gear

Not only because of the kind of sloppy editing by Doug in this video (guess the jump cuts were inspired by the "nouvelle vague") this here is my favourite M5 review off all times, that really expresses the madness of this car.

Top Gear (the real one), 2 parts, sorry 4 the low quality on youtube, yes data can rot to...

To answer all of your questions:

Engine remained in the car.
You have to remove the pan. (Why wouldn't you???)
I figured you just poured out the old ones during an oil change and stuffed new ones down the filler neck.

Funny I watched this review AGAIN right after watching doug's. I'm not sure why but its one of my favorite reviews by clarkson. He kinda makes it funny but its stupid at the same time. "I'm a sharrrrkkk"

It is a great transmission for what it is. The failures of SMG components were mainly due to heat exposure. I had ZERO issues with my SMG. Shifting at redline with the tranny in S6 mode was one of the most emotionally satisfying things about this car and it THROWS you in the seat with each click of the paddle. The manual transmission in these cars was essentially an E39 transmission. It had slower acceleration and a dramatically reduced top speed.

My E60 M5 was extremely reliable. I did the rod bearing change myself at45K miles. The only issues I ever had were the steering angle sensor and the ionic control module for cylinder bank 2 ($97 on eBay). Of course if you look online, there are people that are going to voice their issues, just as we have issues with our M3's. They are not that bad of a car.

One of my fondest memories was killing my buddy's Gallardo in a drag race. I was once doing 145 with four people in the car and came up over a mountain highway only to see 6 bikers doing 125. We flew past them and the head turns and looks we got through their helmets was hilarious.

Probably the coolest most ridiculously designed cars ever and I can't wait to own another.

I agree. The issues with the S65 and S85 are way overblown. Considering shops are charging about the same amount to change the RBs as it would cost for a set of tires...just consider it a maintenance expense.

I'm secretly hoping people keep verbally trashing this car, so I can pick up a sweet example for my collection in a few years, though I'm leaning towards a E63 right now over a E60.

His trademark review of the quirks and interior features of every car is indeed unique and entertaining, however I wish that the road test portions of his videos would be longer. Usually he spends > 2/3 of the video going through interior features, and the road test becomes kind of an after thought.

I don't mind Doug. It's entertaining to watch when you just want to not think about anything and need a break. I appreciate it more for the quirks and features, and even the driving feedback is somewhat useful because he's just tooling around on city streets. So it's more of what you'd feel driving a car daily or around town, versus out on the open road. It's a good review for what it is, and nothing more, nothing less.

My gripe with this one was the fact that he didn't really focus on the sound of the S85. It's what makes the car special, imo. Many cars are fast, and have 4 doors. None sound as exotic as the E60 M5. It's the only reason I want to add one to my garage. I love the S65 in my M3, love its responsiveness, and its noise too. But it's not F1 sounding like the S85.

Think about it this way, you're essentially getting a Lamborghini Gallardo, in a sedan, that's way more reliable and for way less. Or at least, that's how it was at the time period.

Hell yes. It was such a thrill!

Heres a really old video of mine at night. THAT SOUND!

Sweet baby Jesus.

What exhaust was that?

Stock.

I only removed the resonator and secondary cats. Wailed at high RPM. Didn't draw attention at low RPM.

Make fun of Doug as you wish, but he isn't wrong for the most part. The SMG is terrible, and the manual derates the power. It has the horrible bangle design (IMO of course). This car was created in a very dark period for cars in general, especially performance cars.

I just logged in and was pleasantly surprised to see a Doug DeMuro video on BimmerPost! I must admit I've fallen for his review style and have been watching MANY over the past months and learned a lot from them... a merger of two obsessions.

Savagegeese's videos are million miles better than Doug's if you really want something meaningful said about the car in question. This guy should have much more subscribers.

I don't usually post about our company's products, but our RVS Technology Triboceramic engine treatment helps with the rod bearing issue, and we have several happy S85 and S65 customers. Now avaliable at ECS Tuning as well
