Remote Start

Well, i have searched all over here to no joy. Any one has figured out a workable after market remote start for the G30? i got a lead from one of the youtube videos. The canadian aftermarket firm successfully installed a Viper 4606 on a 2018 540i. Any one please? I am going to melt in our AZ 120s coming summer if not.

I know this doesn't help you, but the 2019 models can get remote start from BMW directly. My friend just bought a 2019 330i with remote start. The 2019 X5 on the showroom had it as well.

They are saying all the 2019 models will be able to add it (it's just a software upgrade) once they have it ready for each model.

That sounds great, but where did you hear that? I believe it's an add-on feature of iDrive 7.0 which is only available on those new X5s, X7s, and 3-Series. I hope what you heard is true!

My understanding is that only the 530e can remote start to run AC. It uses battery only for that feature. But not 100% on that.

that would be great, but what's BMW's record on retro fit... when they can't even really do over the air update

All pf the 2019 models WITH ID7 yes; the 2019 G30 still has ID6 and the OEM remote start is not compatible.

That's exactly what I said above. There's no way this is going to be backwards compatible with iDrive 6.

really odd remote start is tie to iDrive, though I suppose everything is full integrated solution these days

The remote climate control is done through iDrive. In fact, so is anything in the BMW Connected app.

I can't say for sure about "only" but I can definitely confirm that with the 530e one can use the phone app to remotely turn on the AC or heat (so long as there is enough battery capacity remaining as it runs the AC/heat off the hybrid batteries).

I use that feature a lot in the summer. After five hours parked at a golf course in Arizona, I use the phone app to turn on the AC as I leave the 17th green. By the time I finish playing and get back to my car, it is nice and cool. The car remains locked and the engine and motor don't start.

This was an important feature to me when I bought my 530e.

It's probably on your vehicle, and not the others because the engine would have to be running for the air-conditioning and heater to be on. I can see why they would do this on an electric vehicle.

Ya. AC and heater are battery powered. I don't know what % of battery charge is required but I am honestly surprised that this feature works when not plugged in. Also, you are in a warm climate. High voltage use on the 530e (AC / heat / edrive) are disabled when its too cold.

How about coding Remote Start on iDrive 6 cars

How about with coding any way to code iDrive 6 cars to have remote starter? My car for example has the remote parking package so it can definitely start the far from remote I can move it around and park it with the remote. Maybe there is a coding toggle we can use to allow remote started from a further distance?

This is not possible with iDrive 6.

Touching 100F

Well, I settled on 15% front and 5% rest with 70% windshield. Looks like its helping. At this point, I am even thinking about a bounty for hunting down a practical remote start for the 540i.

Found this on youtube and actually called them up. They say they can do it on any G30 model. They are using a viper system but do "something" else and that I have to bring the car over. I wonder why professional installers here are not able to do anything with this.

I sure wish it was. My golfing buddy walks toward his new X5, hits the button three times, and it starts. He is in airconditioned comfort a lot sooner than I am

I agree. The ventilation feature is useless in Texas.

Do you think that we will get the remote start and RSU when the Android update is ready? I am unclear whether idrive 7 lite hardware and the various modules would support these features.

I have seen an internal BMW paper informing the dealers that iD7 Lite will never have remote start or RSU. The LCI may well have RSU as Connected Drive thinks my 530e with iD7 Lite has it (it doesn’t) !

No one has any clear idea and I wouldn't say anything should be considered reality until it is or isn't delivered with the update in the summer for Android Auto.

No one has a clear idea why BMW updated the 5 series to iDrive 7 in MY2020 and didn't hold it out until the LCI. BMW has other MY2020 cars that are still shipping with iDrive 6 so they could have done the same here. Especially since iDrive 7 "Lite" creates a weird splinter for iDrive 7 that will add complexity for them.

What I mean is iDrive 7 is built around the idea of RSU to keep the software improving overtime. Features such as personal assistance will need more frequent updates than classic voice commands. iDrive 7 "Lite" creates a situation where they can't cleanly keep the platform in line. But that splinter only exists on the MY2020 5 series.

People say BMW is run by bean counters so the decision makes very little sense

But we're literally 4 days from the unveiling of MY2021 and unless you're buying a lot car you're very unlikely to be able to order a MY2020 5 series anyway. I'd just wait and see what's concrete for MY2021. For all we know MY2021 will be iDrive 7 "Lite" too...

Thanks for explanation. I already have a 2020 M550, ordered in November and arrived in February before the SHTF.
