530e Check Engine Light?
This is the second time this has happened. I get in the car in the morning to go to work. I turn on the car, which as you know, does not start the engine, all the idiot lights go out, except the check engine light stays on. I called the local dealership (Schomp BMW) and they said to make an appointment if it does not go out after a while. Last time it went off after three driving cycles. I am assuming the same will happen this time. Has anyone else had their check engine light come on without the engine running?
Thanks, G. |

I have an appointment next week. The light persisted for two days this time. But has since gone out. Will update with any insights the service center provides.

Had the car in yesterday at the dealership. The acknowledged the problem and said there is a service bulletin out for it. Apparently there are a "couple of modules that are not talking to each other correctly". The update is a firmware install. The service ticket highlights are:
Found Fault code 34487 for flexray initialization Per SIB 34 02 18 Need to program vehicle to latest integration level. Programmed to 18 03 520 I did lose a lot of my settings (except my seat and radio stations). The UI seems smoother, and oddly the engine does as well. Not sure how much of that is a real change or just that is was snowing like crazy on the way home and so I drove differently than normal. G. |

I brought my car in for this and the dealership is currently ordering me a controller from Germany. It's definitely for the battery and they said it was a connector. Do you have a 17 or 18 MY?

2018 with a build date at the end of August 2017. Curious what the controller was that needed to be replaced. The check engine has only happened twice in the three months I have had it. Will see if it re-appears.

I never had the check engine light on problem. I bought the car in June 2017 and I have almost 9k miles on it. I took it in for the regular service and they said there was a software update. I also lost my phone and radio settings after the update. Car doesn't seem different from before the update.

My CIL came on at 7500 miles the day after BMW changed the oil (no previous issues). I made an appointment and it drove perfect for 4 days but the light wouldn't go out. They said there were actually 2 codes, one for fuel mixture too lean and one for too rich. The kept it for 3 days of trouble shooting, drove it for 30 miles (did not fill my gas after) and determined that I was just not using the engine enough. I only filled up 5 times in those 7500 miles. They suggested that the engine needs to be exercised more and that I should burn more gas, like once per week run it to work and back. They also suggested not running the battery all the way down because it will damage itself (full auto mode doesn't protect the battery??). Also the 1st advisor told me the lean/rich mixture was oil gas, I was like Oh no, blown head gasket??

Were they able to fix it? If so, what was the resolution?
SteveinArizona? I started getting the CIL this week. It's on and off and no action taken by me to resolve. Im not getting any code errors or notifications. Can I ask what the issue was and was BMW able to fix it? or just live with it? |

All these random guesses are hilarious, its a CEL light. There could be literally hundreds of reasons it posts. Without a scanner its all just speculation and guessing.

First thing to check for a CEL is always the gas cap. Is it properly on and tight.
Otherwise, pull the codes via a code reader or a BMW CarData report. And take it in or repair the fault. CEL is emissions system related so it should be covered under the 8Y federal emissions rules or the 15Y coverage in CARB states. |

I'm not a tech, but I'd imagine a CEL code would stick around until cleared unless it is the fuel door CEL (and that probably sticks around too). The battery has a 8Y (most states)/10Y (CARB states) warranty so if it is HV battery related that should be covered. |

I’m perplexed because check engine light turns off by itself without any action on my part. But it will come back on. And then turn offf again. No codes. Anyone have this issue on 530e?

Some code readers aren’t versed in BMW so don’t list them all. You can always pull a BMW CarData report which is going to pull the codes from the car via BMW (BMW sends all the car’s codes to them so they can alert the dealer you use for service). https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/usa/a...-for-customers Otherwise, no one here can help without codes. Have you engaged a dealer? |

While I've only had my car 2 weeks, this behavior started for me as well. Actually last week the CEL came on once, but it was immediately after I had contacted BMW to change the map region, and the iDrive had to be reset for some reason, so the CEL seemed weird, but it only stayed on for a couple of minutes, and then was gone. I just wrote it off as an anomaly, until this morning, CEL came on as soon as I "started" car, my default mode is max e-drive, so ICE never started, drove around as normal, all e-drive, and stopped at a buddies that has a scanner, nothing showed up. I called BMW and got an appointment next Monday, but then on way back from lunch CEL went out. I assume faults stay for some period of time, and they will be able to see that in a week. Most of my driving is e-drive, ICE comes on very little, many days not at all, did have ICE use on Saturday, seemed fine at that point. Mine is a 2020, LogicalApex if the CEL is gone would it still show if I pull a report from BMW?
