California HOV decal placement

I cringe at the thought of defacing my new M-Sport 530e with the red/purple colored California HOV decals. Care to share any tips on how to position and place this ugly thing in the most tasteful way?

The DMV instructions read:

1. Please place the large stickers on the rear quarter panels - one on each side of the vehicle, behind the wheel wells, with the State Seal in the up position.

2. Please place the small stickers on the right side of each bumper, front and rear, with State Seal in the up position.

One creative solution is to skip 1. and apply 2. as shown here:

Sorry to tell you, but I haven't found any good placement for it that makes it legal.

I still debating if I should get these as I am very hesitant to put these stickers on the bumpers. They appear to have the same adhesive as the license plate stickers. I've heard that they are a pain to remove and can even ruin the paint if you don't have PPF.

Wow that ugly and looks cheap and nasty.
Can you put it on the rear window perhaps? Use say blutack so something like tape doesn't melt on it in hot weather, easy to take off as well??

Hello,

I stumbled onto this Youtube video where a technician places the carpool sticker onto a Tesla using 3M special film, which doesn't damage paint when removing your stickers at expiration.

If the link doesn't work, just google "3M carpool sticker tesla" - it's the video with the white Tesla on a checkboard garage floor.

I did this with my 530e, so hopefully you'll find it helpful.

Regards,
Bill530e

Here's a real-life example of an application on an M-Sport rear. Not pretty.

I plan to use the 3M method and only place one on the rear bumper. In the Bay Area I see that a lot. As low as possible.

How long did it take to receive it? I submitted my paperwork about 45 days ago and they haven't even cashed the check :

yeah I have the stickers, got them about 2 months ago, still haven't put them on...luckily I don't drive far daily and rarely need the HOV lane, and when I do I almost always have a passenger in the car with.....I can't bring myself to putting on these decals (yet)

A two-month long wait is unacceptable. I suspect that CA DMV got a large number of HOV decal applications at the beginning of the year since many folks were delaying their submission in late 2018 in order to receive the 2019 purple-colored decals.

Hi, I bought the following from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/VViViD-Clear-...16&sr=8-3&th=1

If the link doesn't work, it's called 3M Clear Paint Protection Vinyl Film 6" x 25". On Amazon, you can actually choose your size, but I found 6" x 25" to be enough for the 4 California carpool stickers. I only applied two stickers (1 large for passenger back side, 1 small for rear bumber). I kept the other two as back-up, with extra film.

Kind regards,
Bill

I installed mine over the XPEL paint protection film.

New barney purple sticker is ugly but I'll take that over stopping at the freeway on-ramp.

I've always had just 1 small decal on my back bumper, on the lower right part of it. I did this on my old i3 for 2.5 years, and have had the red sticker on my 530e for the past year.

Ironically, I was just pulled over a week ago by CHP on the HOV toll road in Los Angeles for having my transponder set to 3+ occupants, while my wife was sitting in front as a passenger. No other cars in the area. The cop said that I was in violation for not setting my transponder to the correct number of occupants in the car, but I then told him I have the HOV sticker on the car that exempts me. He looked a bit puzzled because he then asked if my car was a hybrid. My car doesn't look like most other 530e's on the road (looks more sporty with the wheels, lips, and stance).

I told him I have a HOV sticker on the car and he asked where was it, as if he didn't even bother to look for it when he pulled me over. Told him on the rear bumper on the right side, next to the exhaust. I then told him I could show him the DMV HOV certificate that I had in the glove box, but right then he turned cool and said not to worry about it and let me go. I was more worried that he was going to hassle me (or ticket me) for no front plate or for not having all of the HOV stickers on the car, but he didn't seem to care about that.

I've driven past a bunch of CHP many times on the freeway with my 530e in the Los Angeles area and never had any issues. I've gotten some weird looks from CHP as if they saw me as a solo driver (or for no front plate) and were ready to pull me over, but as soon as I went by them they must've seen the HOV sticker and never bothered to get behind me or anything.

Point being from that long story, I don't have any issues with just the 1 small sticker on my back bumper, nor have others that I've seen do it as well.

It’s 3M Xpel clear bra. Did the same with wife 530e and will do it on my own 530e when stickers arrives.

You should be happy with 2 months delay. When I applied for my wife sticker it took full 4 months back in early 2018.
