540xi Consumption?
Hello,
I am the proud owner of a new BMW 540i xdrive and I just got the car for the past 2 days. I'm from Europe, so the metrics are different, but I've noticed that the consumption # is stuck to 20L/100KM (That's around 14 MPG) If that a real consumption for this car? How much does your car consume? Just wondering, I kinda feel like I got an M5, not a 540i at this consumption, haha! |

All depends how heavy the right foot is I guess but 20 is very high as an average. For last 2000+k's I'm averaging just over 8l/100 (mix of city/highway). Try resetting the trip statistics.

~13.500km on the odo and my overall average is 10.5Lt/100km
20Lt/100km is quite normal depending on how you drive. Attaching a photo of a trip summary from last summer , 90% of it was highway and 10% in city with lots of traffic lights

This is a classic how long is a piece of string!
Heavy stop start traffic is not great, having to accelerate a getting on for a 2 ton car uses a lot of fuel where steady motorway cruising uses a lot less. My worst has been mid teens mpg (imperial) ranging to my all time best of 47.7mpg (have a photo of that) |

Thank you so much for the responses, yes I've driven the car 100% in traffic/city.
On my old diesel 2.0 audi the consumption was 13-14 because of heavy traffic, not it's 20. I'm good with that and I think it will even up when I take longer rides. |

Welll, that 20 it's a hard-coded value, so the BC will not show the real consumption, even if it's more than 20.
I've had the car for about 1 month and put 6000 km on it. I also drive in Europe, so it means a lot of speeding. Average city consumption (fuel pump calculated) is 18.3, compared to my F10 530D which was 14. Outside, the consumtion is around 12, on country roads, and 11 on highways (around 150-160 average speed). I'm a bit surprised about the consumtion too, but yet again, the red line is at 7000 rpm . |

To get a balance, you need to reset and try some lighter driving, see how economical the engine can be in better conditions. |

The dealership told me because the car is brand new I need to do at least 1000-2000km so It can have an history, real history.
I am not worried about the consumption, I think is fair for my driving style. I want to feel and hear the car and I want to enjoy it, not drive it as a slow car, but I was a bit curious because I some of you in another posts that are doing 12-15l/100km Last edited by bctz123; 03-21-2019 at 10:43 AM.. |

Given your type of driving your figures look perfectly reason able to me.
You'll obviously get the best out of it at a steady speed , I'd say around 50mph is about the sweet spot . Enjoy driving it though, that's what it's about. |

The 540 is a wonderful car with great balance. In the words of Donny Brasco, when discussing fuel economy, "Forget about it". Just enjoy it. |

Yes if you want an economical car, a 540i is probably not the best choice!
Agree though it's a good balance , a real Jekyll and hyde. Very fast if you want it to be and (for its weight and power) reasonably economical at the other end of the scale . |

Currently have only 1,500 miles on my 540ix but getting around 18 mpg. Started at 16 mpg but it's slowly going up as the car breaks in. I believe it should eventually get low- mid 20s. My 8cyl Benz was getting around 22 mpg at 180k. I actually got much better mileage the older it got.

I'm getting 10.5L/100km on my m550ix, I do 80% hwy & 20% city with 25% sport mode & 75% adaptive mode. Now at 11500km, very impressed with how this new turbo technology works. I went on a 800km road trip last week and the refuel warning light only came on when I almost reached 700km. I was very much amazed by how efficient this car is especially with a 4.4L V8. Your fuel consumption will keep improving as long as you don't go crazy on the throttle.

I'm averaging 24.6 (9.5 l/100km) mpg right now, mostly highway driving with some city driving.
I saw up to 35 (6.7 l/100km) mpg on highway and down to 12mpg (19.6l) in city. I don't know how you can average 20l/100 km. There is either a problem, or you're in sport mode with sport plus transmission setting in the city all the time.

I went for a 200km ride to the mountains and I did like 8-9L/100km and now the average after doing some sport mode mountain roads tests is up to 14L/100km
I think the secret is to combine highway, longer rides, with city drive. I've observed that I need to be very very gentle with the gas, barely touch it, to get a good consumption. If I floor even 20-30% of it, the two turbos come in and up it goes over 20L. I need to be more gentle with the car when I don't rush anywhere, and hit it hard when I feel like it The city that I live in has a lot of traffic and I've did a lot of kickdowns, and sport plus, but that's ok |

or switch to eco pro..., though in all honesty if your average speed is low, lots of stop and go, your mileage is going to suffer a lot

I drove on a 2000+ mile road trip last week on highways in my 540i, stayed in Comfort Mode, and averaged 29 mpg. In the city, with lots of stop lights on my commute, I keep it in Eco Mode and average about 24 mpg. I did try Eco Mode on highway and thought that it actually made my mileage worse because when I did need to speed up quickly, you almost have to floor it to make it jump up and go. I didn't think Eco Mode helped at all on the highway.
