Hi,
I think you have to bear in mind that the M550 is different in character from the M3. Being larger and more comfort-oriented, a more restrained color would be better-suited in my opinion. In other words, not orange, although any kind of blue would work. The Med blue looks fine, but still not sure if it's appropriate long-term for such a car. Personally I went for the Sophisto-grey, which is great in its subtlety; in the sun it reveals a kind of dark purplish glow ("brillianteffekt" in German). But I do agree with you, the color range for this model seems veeery limited... Good luck with your final decision, best to see as many cars in-the-metal before finally pulling the trigger.

I think the M550 can pull off Sunset Orange or Snapper Rocks Blue and look good. It may not be in keeping with other people's perception of the vehicle, but its YOUR perception that counts.

As its a lease and he doesn't have to worry about the residual value of the car, he may as well go for a crazy colour if that is his preference - he will only have the car for perhaps 3 years. After that, it is the lease company's problem. |

Good points guys, keep them coming.... It really is a dilemma (a first world dilemma at that). It is a lease and not a purchase as I don't think I'd ever could justify popping for the full $5k and potential resale consequences down the road on a purchase. As is, its basically a decent bottle of wine per month to have a "fun" color.
There is a good argument about the understated sleeper look of the M550 over the M3 and keeping colors in that vein. My wife is more along the lines that Snapper Rocks might be too "poser-esque" to an M5 and I should just go stock color and drink more wine. Perhaps part of it is I still get soo many compliments on my f80 Sakir Orange all the time. Much more than with my old e90 Interlagos Blue I had a few years ago. Makes for great conversation when out n about. I'm not much of a black fan though I know the Azurite has some cool deep blue undertones. I was surprised how purple the Almandine Brown can look. I have not seen a Rhodonite in person yet unfortunately. You guys are making good points, I appreciate them n keep it up as I have a Production # and need to lock this week, uugh. |

I came from a Yas Marina Blue M4 with blacked out parts and carbon fiber. Very fitting of the M car.
For the 5 I wanted a little less look at me. I went Bluestone Metallic with all blacked out parts. Very fitting of this car and still remains sporty with a little more luxury and class this round. I would say go Rhondonite silver / Sophisto grey or maybe consider something like Moonstone. I think Snapper looks great on the M5 but the 550 is not as sporty and aggressive to pull off this color.. but that's just my opinion. Unless your still wanting that look at my car attention, I for one am enjoying being a bit more under the radar this round and the car does still get compliments.. but not a convo starter like Yas or Sakhir. I do think something like San Marino Blue would look awesome, definitely stand out but fit the cars body quite well. Best of luck in your decision. |

Another vote for the color that makes you happy. The only one that it needs to please is you (and probably -- or more importantly -- your significant other).
I personally prefer a more sleeper look that blends in with the rest (especially when I am speeding). |

The problem with custom colours is .............. you get nothing for it come Part exchange time, it's just like any extra, dealerships do not take it into account and look at market values.
I had an F10 540i M Sport only this year with Individual Paint and MPPK fitted, got offered no more than if it had none of it fitted, and I had to punt around till I found a decent PX price.

My F80 is sakhir orange as well. Personally I think the "fun colours" are best left to the M cars, it suits them better. Went for rhodonite on the G30, a bit more restrained.
Same goes for M perf add ons and black kidney grilles... they look great on a track-oriented missile, look silly on a comfy diesel saloon. |

One option to consider is to just buy a black car (blank canvas) and then have it completely wrapped, door & trunk jams and all. Depending where you go, that'll cost you anywhere from $3-6k, but you'll get the car sooner than waiting for a custom paint job on the car, and you can literally pick any color that you want. Most of the newer Avery or 3M gloss vinyl looks just as good as paint.
